basing on a new seed does let you bypass the portal ore restriction, which is a type of cheating and defeats some of the exploration and adventure of the game. It also relieves tedium after a while, though. It also cancels the raids until you drop boss heads on the standing stones, and if you don't do that, it means you can't get your buffs.
Anyway, I do both. I have my play-the-game seed and bases off on other worlds just because. Some of my bases are kind of large and exotic, so I duplicated the stuff (mostly iron, stone, and now black marble) that is boring to farm on the alternate seeds though my play-the-game seed is all done legit
mostly because of the portal restrictions;
I setup in the first black forest first so I don't have to run far to smelt my ore.'
my "bases" look like camps really, each thing that needs to be covered has its own separate shelter. and I usually extend 1 tile of roof and wall to create a shelter spot where I stack the items for rested buff.
Then I move to the edge of a swamp to setup for progressing my iron and smelting it.
its wise to bring 6 copper with you so you can make a smith, because you will want to make your Iron nails so you can build the better boat and not have MonkaS on the sea
I have a spot right now where It borders 3 biomes Plains, Meadows and Swamp;
Whenever I have trouble with the Plains I run into the Swamp and they do combat.
It also has a Mountain biome on it so I have used it for my Iron tech, Silver tech, taming Lox, Taming Wolf(setup in mountains) and taming bores.
I think its good to have all of these on the same Island and with being close to Plains I am able to farm the barley and flax in relative danger lol.... Deathskeetows almost killed my 1 star wolf. I have him protecting my meadows base rn from night spawns.
Since I am so spaced out I do not proc raids I donot think.
I keep my smithing area further away, I read somewhere it needs a proximity of so many things or w/e.
I'm proggressed to kill Moder rn but I think I have a good setup here to prog into the next tier.
I have a spot where I can run my taimed Lox's through the woods to crush the trees for wood and I think I have them in a spot where they can protect from deathskeetows i hope? Lol.
I'm building now on a raised portion where I cut out a chunk of a hill to trap 2 Lox's. so I guess my "Garage" is in the basement Lol. Its elevated 2 Lox's high because they were jumping ontop of eachother when I was taming them I just had to make it higher. and it protects quite well because its essentially just terrain, I have a wood floor over top of my lox "pit/garage" and am building the beginnings of a house ontop.
Every semi-hub I make i end up putting 2 portals at it just incase,
and I just name change for when I want to go, and name change it back right before I walk through. I put 2 portals because you can user error and get yourself stuck in nowhere if u do it too quick or are a bit too loose and forgetful on your portal configs.
I also haven't thrown down a bed yet on my world so, I just use a portal at the Altar to get to wherever base I need.
I started this seed as Hardcore, but decided to play it out after I failed while doing something stupid haha
I'm planning on doing a portal hub at the Altar, since that's the respawn point with no bed I will use it as a central area to branch into my semi-hub's or whatever branches aren't connected that want to directly connect to.
also you can copy paste in the game, so if you have a sticky situation where u have to change a portal name really quick, type it out in the dialog box highlght it and cut(ctrl+x,or ctrl+x to copy), so you can paste it directly in (ctrl+v) when u approach ur portal. I like to use ctrl+x because then I know I hit the right hotkey and its ready to be pasted.
For the hub area I'm plannign on moving my farm up so I'm in range so I'm breeding lox, wolfs, and boars and making food for the boars all near my main hub. and I think I have that.
I also have a large goblin base near by so I think I will be set on DarkIron when I start cranking that up after I kill Moder here shortly.
Its also right on the side of a meadows creek, so I'm going to widen that into a Canal and I will have a dock right there too!
after thinking and typing this out I've become quite excited to progress this spot haha

I started using this space on every playthrough because it's super convenient and SAFE, for setting up a workshop for processing nearby copper / tin / bronze, and eventually I started trying to see how many ways I could set up the space...

Really the possibilities are endless... can make it as simple as digging out a dirt cave, or as fancy as you want and still have a spacious home / workshop.
Then I try to find a good spot with bunch of bioms bordering, right now I've a base in a meadows, next to the water, next to a black forest and plains, with a swamp just over the water. So once that I was able to go to plains and I started a flax/barley-farm on the edge. :)
At that map it was an island near the coast; but the last two times I started a map, I used islands more off the coast.
Right now I'm setting up a temporary base in the Meadows somewhere between the spawn and Eikthyr, having nothing more as a bed, a fire a workbench and a chest.
As soon as Eikthyr is defeated, I create a raft, sail out for an island and settle there. I prefer to use Black Forest islands; as that often means there's at least one copper vein and some tin deposits there, making it easier to get the first basic bronze items.

Thorin :)
If I discover that my starting island is quite large I will typically make a second base on that same island about the furthest distance away from the original.
I don't like setting up tiny temporary bases where I can smelt and craft with my new metals on-site. I never found that the time and planning involved in gathering, transporting and building for that setup ultimately made things faster than immediately defaulting to the plan of journeying your metals to your main home through a familiar route. And if you leave excess metals scattered around these temporary bases and never go back to pick them up, that's more time and resources wasted.
This is all solo-talk though. I'm sure the efficiency of those temporary bases multiply when there are more people to use their facilities. On my own, my temporary bases will typically consist of only of objects and structures that are extremely simple to gather for. A spike fence perimeter, a rain-sheltered campfire, a sheltered level 1 workbench, some chests, and I will probably also bring materials for a portal if I'm hitting a new landmass.
Of course, that's when I'm playing solo to. I try not to be so all over the place if im playing with others just due to consideration. I'll still fix up random ruins for resting (or put fires in troll caves, love that one to) but my actual personal bases that are claimed or have personal gear are a bit more minimal in MP games. Usually in those it's just the big 3 (spawn, swamp, and plains) with maybe one near the merchant depending on how inconvenient his spawn was that map.
as far as base design goes, my 'best design' currently is:
10x10 approximate size. This is important: with workbench, forge, new forge, magic bench, spinning wheel, etc the crafting area alone is a little crowded if you go much smaller. Assuming you need a staircase and storage, 10x10 gives enough room to place it artistically and have space to walk around.
3 floors, and which floor is what is important.
bottom: crafting stations, but not the smelter/kiln/blast furnace/windmill/ etc
middle: bedroom, couple of portals (hub and open one for quick pop home), hot-tub room sometimes. Typically this is dug down into the ground so it appears to be a 2 story building.
top: kitchen. Fire hearths above buffs the bedroom for full rested, top level has raised roof with vent rather than chimney approach.
Often I get smaller as I go up, since only the crafting room needs the full space. My latest one for example the smelter & friends are outside but on top of the crafting room and the top 2 floors are instead about 3/4 size.
My goal is both pretty and efficient. When I am at my workbench, I want to access all the materials without moving, so my chests are in the floor or in the wall nearby. I typically have a chair or throne as the central buff spot, so I know that sitting there gets me full rested buff rather than trying to wiggle into the one spot where its max.
