Raw Fish Yield

In one fishing trip, I managed a few perch but that gave me something like 6 raw fish from the cauldron. I then took my ship out a little and managed 2 tuna and 3 pike. Pre-Mistlands that would have given something like 10 fish but the cauldron only gave me 5. Is this simply rng? I made some mossy bait but haven't tried it yet.

Raw fish gained is based on fish level now instead of type. Level 1 gives 1 raw fish and each additional level increases the yield by 3 more (so Level 2 = 4, Level 3 = 7, etc). All fish types can be found up to Level 5.

Yup.. it is RNG based on the level of fish you get like avatar.zero said. I went out and spent maybe an hour fishing and got 1x5* 6x3* 3x2* and like 10x1* so I think I got like 45 or so? Which was more than enough for a lot of wraps to last a few days.

Mossy bait is used specifically to catch troll head fish in the black forest.

Did you miss the level on the fish somehow? Mistlands PTS had this as well.
