But there is a simple and stupid solution.
Araund your base dig down the ground all araund and trolls wont be able to reach you (they can still trow rocks).
Or just make a new world and move materials to that one as only raid that will spawn are pigs (till you kill a troll again).

Added: Don't forget to make sure there is workbench coverage over the whole thing to avoid inside spawns. You can replace the workbench with something else, like a campfire if you don't want workbenches everywhere, but it will show you where the boundaries are.
How id you kill Elder without even using bronze stuff? If you're that good you should be able to handle 2 trolls ez pz.
They are not ignorant of the fact that there are inventory decisions, that you must immediately after getting your pick axe go and ditch out your base (some folks don't for some unknown reason), that there will be raids that make this absolutely necessary if you want peace. Not only do you maybe want to ditch but then you need to set down items that will stop spawning within your base. If even the smallest area is not covered you can have a troll pop into the middle of your base. It's a process. Diligent Vikings are rewarded, sloppy ones not so much.
The night is a dangerous time which is about the only time you ever see a GD Shaman & brute ouside of spawners in BF. They tell you to sleep at night, over and over again.
They make stamina an issue, starting at the beginning of the game so you learn that you must keep track of it. They give you 3 food slots for this very reason. They give you 3 (much later 4) types of foods to balance this depending on what you are doing and where you are.
You must make decisions and all decisions have consequences. The earlier you kill The bosses, the sooner you start getting more raids so the best thing to do is kill it when you are actually ready to go into the next biome. For the Elder you should probably have nice bronze weapons and round shield, a full set of level 3 troll gear or bronze gear and be very comfortable in the black forest.
I wouldn't run out and face tank a troll until I have a bronze shield and my health above 100. Your ability to parry is directly related to your health.
Knowing all this means you know that the black forest is where you spend a lot of time gathering resources. Without tons of exploration and crypts done the rest of the game is going to be a struggle.
Oh, and the trolls always spawn in 2s at beginning of event. If you kill one, another spawns. Your decision is whether to just kite them around, kill for mats or make a fully defended base big enough that you can ignore the event all together. Your choice. You can choose to follow the course of least resistance and have fewer deaths or you can choose to ignore it all and be very frustrated.
Millions of Vikings have gone before you and learned from their mistakes, but some find the game too linear and too demanding, making them progress in a certain way. Not every game fits every gamer's playstyle.
You can see stake walls in the build menu and you think that's the way, and that maybe you'll get something that will work better later on. Other games do level up their defense offerings as the threats get harder. This game doesn't really. I'm sure that very few new players figure out that the trench completely breaks pathing for anything that walks and that walls are mostly for decoration, breaking line of sight, or to slow things down while you kite them away.
I died a bunch of times against the Elder (probably like 20 times, most of the deaths was me trying to recover my loot to fight again but getting 1 shot by the ranged attack), but i ended up adapting to him and killing him using his ritual site (there were some rocks and pillars, i ran around the area and used pillars for cover against ranged attacks, forced the boss to stomp and i would dash in and out do 2-3 hits per attempt, when he spawned roots, i ran around the area to the side that had no roots and avoided his ranged hits and lured him to melee range again, repeat this for like 5 or so minutes and he is dead). I also set up small pit stop stations everywhere i go, basically a workbench, a bed, a campfire and a chest, some walls and bit of roof, so if i die, i respawn nearby, this mixed with a portal for quick travelling between where i am and my main base, these pit stops is where i usually leave the common resource stacks i come across my exploration, because they are abundant.
My main weapons have been: flint spear + flint axe, wood round shield and crude bow. I dished out around 40 fire arrows on the boss and then slowly killed him using my spear and then axe. I got to nearly lvl 50 with the flint spear, i would have likely gone over 50 if i never died.
I do more damage with the spear but it ended up becoming damaged during the fight.
The reason i did not use bronze gear earlier was because i only made tin bars and ignored copper ore. Then i decided to make copper bars today and like half a hour later, i get mauled to death by 2 trolls nonstop.
I couldn't handle both trolls because my base has walls all around the area, trolls spawned right next to the walls, i was outside of my house making bars to then make bronze stuff, the moment i saw the message, i ran inside my house to eat 3 pieces of meat, and as soon as i step outside, i get mauled to death, all of this happened in 10 seconds, from seeing the pop up message on the event, to my death. Following deaths were essentially spawn kills, since my house is small, trolls were mauling the house and hitting me as soon as i revived, basically 2-3 seconds and i'm dead again.
And by wood walls i mean the spiky ones that cost 4 wood, i know they aren't much, but it is the stuff i have available for me (hence the reason why stone building should be earlier, not after unlocking the event), stone resists troll hits, wood gets destroyed too easily. A troll raid this early makes no sense, it will punish the player hard without giving them a fair chance at fighting back. Troll raids should come after the 3rd boss, the swamp gives you resources to build stone buildings, which is what one would require to "survive" against a troll raid, without having to dig trenches around the base, as people are saying here
This was my 4th base and the only one that i decided to use stairs to get in and out of the base. All the other bases used doors. So basically i had to go up to a corner to get out of my base, but i never got that far since i got killed every single time after leaving my small house in the center.
I've killed trolls before, but i did so using arrows, i tried melee against them but it felt too risky this early to do that, 2-3 hits in melee range with food buffs and proper gear and i'm dead, using bow and luring the troll around tight spots is the way i dealt with them from a very early stage in the game. I lured trolls to black forest ruins (the stone towers) and have used them as cover before, i noticed that trolls struggle to destroy these with their melee, so i assumed stone buildings are the go-to for survival against these enemies.
I would even dare say killing a single troll with melee is much harder than dealing with the elder boss. Despite the stat differences. Trolls are faster and hit faster and have more range with their melees, the elder is easy to figure out the pattern, he has the same stomp animation for each of his legs, a ranged attack animation, a roar and a kneel that spawns roots, pretty simple...
See, this is the kind of stuff that annoys me with this game. How is a new player meant to learn/understand that trenches break npc pathing and making them braindead during invasions? I literally had to get my ass destroyed by 2 trolls without having any fighting chance from the moment i get the warning and from what i was leaving my house, 10 seconds was the amount of time that separated the start of the event and my death. How is someone meant to be ready for battle if things happen all of a sudden? If i had like 20 seconds instead of 10, i could have jumped out of my base and lured the trolls somewhere else, instead of being mauled to death nonstop.
This is no different than me figuring out that i should travel with portal materials in my inventory, to quickly travel home, bank and return to where i was, this gets annoying because i end up spending too much time moving around and managing inventory, chests and what things to leave behind or not. Inventory slots are a major issue in this game, majority of items you come across are worth keeping for later use, to create mead or whatnot.
I have to constantly rely on the wiki to know what each item is used for specifically, to figure out if i should bring it with me or leave it be, i figured out recently i don't need more flint, so i stopped collecting that stuff and simply dropped if i came across it somehow. Samething with common resources like wood and stone. There is nothing ingame telling me what each item is used for unless i have the recipes unlocked at a workbench or something along those lines. Which adds further issues with inventory management because i have no clue what i can do with specific items, here i am collecting piles of bones, thinking i could make bone gear but i can only make a shield, great. When i say bones, it happens with many other items, from trophies, to monster-only drops, etc.
Earth walls and dry moats are what the actual Vikings used for defense. Those things work in game too for every thing except flying creatures.
Edit: You had the wiki open and didn't read about troll raids?
DEAR OP, HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF THE ATGEIR?
It is a 2-handed weapon thats secondary attack knocks away and stuns almost everything. bronze lvl. 1 atgeir can stun lock and kill any non2-star troll with proper stamina maintenance.
