Boats are broken
This is the third time now that one of my boats have flipped upside down and broke itself. It happened twice with the karve and just now the third time with the longboat. Wouldn't be so bad if half the mats didn't sink. I was up in the mountain for the first time in this playthrough getting silver and ran back down with a stack to put in the boat to find it over turned and taking damage. What is causing this? It's incredibly irritating. Also, devs listen, don't make mats sink if your not going to allow me to swim beneath the water. Give us something here! Either make all mats float or allow us to dive for them.

We have had similar issues. We've started playing with the Mod Floating Items. At least you don't lose all your boat mats this way.

How do mods work with dedicated servers? Does everyone on it need the mod or does the person who set up the server need to use the mod? Or can you use mods with dedicated servers at all?

My exact thoughts when I killed serpent for first time, like the meat floats which I guess is the important part, but bruh.
On the shore you can kinda get to them by jumping high, but still, it shouldn't be this way.

I do think diving down would be nice in this game, was surprised I couldn't do it actually. Not that I expect there to be a lot down there, but having to jump off your ship and dive for loot when you've just killed a serpent for the first time would have been an experience.

IIRC most(?) mods will need to be on the client and server. I haven't tried it just read about it once.

My way around this is to dock. Build a work bench, a portal, and a couple of chests. Make sure that you have room and weight in your inventory to hold all the items to make the boat. Make sure auto gather is on. Then stand on the mast and take your axe to the boat until it breaks. As you drop into the water the materials that went into making the boat will go into your inventory. Portal back to your base and put the boat materials away.

Tale the portal back to your ore source/new island and go mine. Fill the chests by the portal with your ore, portal any other goods back to your base, repeat until the ore vein is tapped out or you have enough ore to fill your boat all the way up. When you portal non-ore goods for the last time grab your boat materials and portal back through.

Rebuild your boat at that island and fill it with ore then decide if you are done at that particular location on that island and if you are dismantle the chests, then the portal, then the work bench and sail the ore home. If you decided you aren't done with that island or you want to continue exploring from that point leave the portal and the work bench and after you have unloaded the ore break the boat down again and portal back.

Rebuild the boat at that location, tear down the portal and then the work bench and sail to your next location and repeat from the top.

Always keep a portal open at your home base for exploration (and it doesn't hurt to have an emergency portal set up too.)

sometimes boats seem to float above the water, like 10 feet up.

i believe they flip over when they fall back down and hit a leech on the side, which can tip them over. honestly no idea though. ive experienced this, but its rare. seems to happen in the swamp.

Don't sail full speed in a storm, and don't let tall waves smash into your broadside. Sail directly into them.

Pretty good suggestion, I'll do this from now on thanks!
Other comments though, haven't witnessed it happen just came back to the boat to find it like that. The second time it happened though a friend I was playing with said he saw the boat in a vertical position before it broke. Also hasn't happened in the swamp, every time has been along black forest or meadow shores. Also It's always been stationary when it happens never flipped a boat whilst sailing. I got this game when they first put it on EA and this is the only playthrough I've ever seen this happen.

There was a bug with this many updates ago, I thought it had been long fixed.

Sometimes you can recover the mats on the bottom by raising it with a hoe, if you are at the shore ofc.

Mats are too far down for that unfortunately. The shore went into the water at a steep angle. Can't even see the mats. I mean I'll make another longboat, I just find it aggravating and makes me want to turn the game off when it happens.

There used to be a bug with boats flipping over if they were in line with a portal, as if the invincible player really was zipping across the space and knocking them over. Not sure if it still does this though. Do they always flip over when docked in the same location?

I believe that the floating in air bug has to do with the position being saved when the waves are high. Happened to me once.

Might be my imagination, but I believe the waves do get higher now than they used to. Sailing my karve when the winds are high seems much more risky than before. Point the bow of the ship into the oncoming wave, not sideways to it, to reduce the chance of being flipped.

But I've taken to docking my ship inside a chest, or portaling home with it as well.

No, they've never flipped while docked at base. Only time they flipped was while out exploring/gathering.

Does the random boat damage glitch still exist in multi player games?

The last time I tried that the raised ground buried the sunken materials.

Yes, it does.
