Sources of fire and workbenches will keep mobs from spawning in a small radius around them. See here for a list of items that can help keep enemies outside:

Oh yeah, definitely this. I've seen them swim a hundred feet out into the ocean just to get around my walls. You need yourself 100% surrounded by walls if you want to keep pests out.

...or 100% surrounded by a simple trench or terrain wall. Beachfront is not secure, I line my beaches with stakes.

Cut a trench or go a step further and cut a wall out of terrain. Use the hoe to build a long mound where you want the wall to be and cut out both sides. Cut the front of your base as you would a trench of the water side. Place work benches around and your safe and sound.

Blanketing one's base with anti-spawn items will prevent them from spawning in your base. Creatures can spawn outside your base away from these items and work their way into one's base. I had necks spawning outside my base, and during storms when the waves were extremely high they were floating over my wall into my base. Had to double the height of that particular wall.

Wards work in single player. I have active wards buried just outside my main gates, as they not only prevent spawns, wards also strengthen structures like walls, gates, cheval de frise. A gate within the proximity radius of an active ward in place will take quite a few more hits by a troll before busting down.

Once getting the height desired, stand in front (some people prefer standing on top, in which case you move forward). With the hoe equipped while backing up, place the reticle (aiming cursor) about 1 foot from the top and click. FF to 1:19 in the following video to see what I mean. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lB0V5s-x_PA

To even out any uneven heights in earthen walls. After earthen walls are finished, one can stand on the top, using the hoe with the aiming reticle placed directly at your feet (looking down from directly overhead), slowly walk forward and click. For some added flavour, alternating between pathen & cobblestone, will alter the texture/pattern on the sides of one's earthen walls. One can also similarly use the Cultivator, which should also alter the texture on the sides of the wall, and allow the planting of carrot, turnip & onion, adding some flowers to the top of earthen walls.
