Do NOT build the new ballista if you value your stats
I just finished clearing everything in the new update until I tried building the ballista and loaded it with blackmetal ammo. Needless to say its an auto-turret and I got one shot and boom 5 of my lv100 skills instantly lowered a bunch.

The new ballista is NOT player friendly and will shoot anything in its frontal vicinity. I got killed roughly 30-40ft away in the ballista's peripheral. Who knew something you create could be the death of you. I could understand the new bear trap killing you, but this is kinda ridiculous .

Wait, you tried standing infront of a huge arrow and expected it to,... not hurt you?
But you do understand that bear traps would hurt?

Not sure if this is a game issue.
I mean most games nowadays make sure you can't die, even if you try hard,... but I for one love to see stuff actually doing what I would expect it to do. A balista certainly SHOULD kill you with a direct hit.

Did it shoot at you or did you get in its way

Well I would not expect a "ballista" to be an auto turret that shoots at it's creator
Tech Enthusiast Dec 1, 2022 @ 8:03am
And it does not as far As I can tell.
But you can still stand in its way of shooting other stuff.

From what i've read, ballista target the player too and it's... intented.
I love this game but this is probably the first one i have played where your own turret/ballista tries to kill you and it feel so wrong to me.

I kinda like the idea. How would a "dead' item know the difference? It sees something "move" and then shoot without taking a DNA test first.

It forces you to think about how to place them

Issue is a ballista does target and shoot the player. This item shouldn't shoot the player at all. Sure if u get in the way of it shot ya.

It shouldn't beable to target u. Traps are one thing this is not a trap

Code it to not target the player. Ballistas are a defensive weapon. They shouldn't be able to target u at all. Getting shot cuz u got in the line of fire is one thing.

Does a ballista do this IRL no it doesnt. Trap damaging players is one thing.

Imo there's no point in building this if it can target the player.

I was standing like ~30ft away from the thing when it fired and i wasnt even directly in front of it. When you place the ballista, it rotates like 45 degrees left and right searching for stuff to kill. Honestly didn't expect it to shoot at me. Edited the post for more clarification.

Speaking of "dead" item it should even not attack automatically and only be controlled by a human. Just like in real life. This makes more sense.

Ballista can target the player as well.

Imo this need to change. Player should only get hit by there ballista if they get in the line of fire.

But not be targeted by it. Makes it pointless as a defensive weapon. Traps tho are one thing

My base is directly in front of the Starting Boss Stones and there wasn't any monsters around except the 2 Skeletons I summoned using Dead Raiser and even they weren't near the ballista. It 100% did target me and had me dumbfounded for a bit till I decided to destroy the damn thing.

Yep, agreed. That would be the better option. In the end, it is the matter of opinion to the devs. If they want the player(s) to suffer, then auto-shoot at any target is what it will be. In which case, think about strategies on how to use it. What is usually the issue with a lot of players (me included) until it is too late :)

As a bare minimum we need the ability to unload it after raids or w/e so it's incapable of shooting us even if it wants to.

This is... actually pretty funny. It sounds like a Wile E. Coyote sketch.
