Roof tiles and angled beams prevent it beneath them. It damages structures to 50 percent health and no further. It also changes the color of structures. You can repair the damage for free with the hammer if you want to spend the time and have a bench close enough.
So far the ground, food, and blocking have seen major reworks and the mountains, combat generally, fishing, and decoration have all had more minor reworks and additions. The weather may be subject to change. In any update including mistlands. They like to keep this stuff close to the chest.
On the other hand I just listed every notable change to the game since release and none of it was dropped on us as a surprise on update day other than the ground rework (it may be the only reason we know it happened). Don't expect such a heavily requested feature to appear out of nowhere.
I'm gonna love seeing all the people berate you for not doing all the research and see how many times they repeat the 4th post in the thread and fail to answer the question all the same.
1) I wish it was gradual and not a sudden change.
2) I wish it looked more natural with some kind of tapering of fading effect towards the outside as compared to how abrupt it looks right now such as any tiles directly under the roof are completely fine and the next tile is damaged.
Mods can fix that problem, if you want to get into that. Mods can fix quite a lot of problems.
please remember that as of now modding is not officially supported. It's done at your own risk, there are no guarantees for future compatibility. Please keep backups of your save files before you start modding. If you need technical support, please always include a full list of active AND prior mods, since that can influence the game's behaviour with regard to bugs.
Have a good day!
I remember seeing a mod specifically for that purpose. I'll share the mods as well as a Youtube video that serves as a good modding introduction for Valheim:

It is also possible to build a working flat roof in vanilla.. build a sandwich of 26 degree peak roof pieces between two layers of floor with short walls at the edges caped by either angled beams or 26 degree X pieces to form a low wall around the top. The topmost flooring will still take water damage but that is of no consequence just adds a weathered look seen only from above.
Valheim rewards thinking outside the box.
PS: For bench in park, make a gazebo.
