Technically speaking, Moder’s drop is the only mandatory one to unlock things. Getting Iron without defeating The Elder is a chore and a half as it’s a low chance drop from Oozers and can be mined in small quantities underground in swamps, which are hard to find without the Bonemass drop. If you cheese enough copper using a Troll, you can get the copper needed to make a pick without Eikthyr. However, there’s no alternative to killing Moder for the special bench to get the final tier(for now) stuff.
You'll see there are several flavors of events that don't trigger until bonemass is defeated. It's nothing gamebreaking.
I'm one of the people that sometimes skips Bonemass and it has a huge benefit of never enabling the 'you are being hunted by wolves' event, that I consider to be one of the most dangerous because it can happen anywhere.
You should note that killing moder will enable 'the goblin army attacks' event. If you have been getting by with so-so defenses before, you might want to upgrade things.
