Looking for early game fireplace/chimney examples.
Most people tend to develop an early game build style that is, for them, efficient and workable and then stick with that same method for most play-throughs.

We all tend to be creatures of habit.

So I am looking for some early game (pre first boss especially, but up to second boss) fireplace/fire-pit designs and chimney/roof exhaust builds to change by habits a bit.

I am sure there will be some unique takes out there so post them please.

I typically do a 2 wide firepit at the back of the longhouse A-frame. I exhaust the fires out the rear instead of the top and put a wall/fireplace mantle in front to keep smoke out from house and to hang spice rack.

I'd go for a higher ceiling on a larger built structure rather than a chimney on a smaller house. Or both a high ceiling & a lowered ''recessed'' fire pit to match. I typically build medium to larger structures as I find it easier to have more storage & vent smoke easier, usually.

When you have a roof that is high up past a certain point, you don't need to put a chimney, as the smoke seems to just raise up to a certain point, linger, & dissipate. Where as inside a smaller, lower roofed structure, you would need a chimney to let the smoke vent...

If I remember I'll chuck some screenshots up later so you can see what it might look like to give you an idea.

Big room, no chimney is easiest.

i just put fireplace on outside by the bed with a roof over it simple til you get farther in game

Put two or one and a half wood walls over your fire pit, then put one height poles on top of it, crowning it with a roof.

Done.

You can have a fire outside your house next to the wall where you sleep and it works for those just starting out.

I do something like electricdawn's pic on the outside, but I just use a corner roof piece with the high point facing outward. Found I don't need the poles with this and then my inside house part looks like PakanNoHida's pic of the indoors. Usually does the trick.

My current early build mimics @PakaNoHida as it is an easy way to get a fire into a reclaimed building.

I am curious if anyone of the 'tall building' crafters have an idea of just how many blocks (meaning a full sized wall piece) high you need to go to make a roof vent (non chimney) work.

@GunsforBucks Interesting build approach. Any inside pics?

@Happy Do you recall how tall, in blocks, you needed to go so the smoke just dissipated over time?

Easiest way to convert a found three-wide building.

You could also scroll at all the build pictures at the top of the forum.

sounds like what i usually do.. a single piece of 45deg roof corner can usually cover a campfire and direct the smoke enough for you.. two pieces stuck together make a nice hood big enough to handle a pair of them..

I actually build my fire pits on the front of my house. Basically, just build a half-wall height fence one floor width from the font of the house (I usually build 3 wide to start with), and leave off the peak, this means that in front of the door is not sheltered, but the two sides are, this allows for a campfire on both sides, one with cooking racks, and one with a cauldron once you get tin.

Other than that, electricdawn's roofing strategy for the chimney is something I do when I need a chimney somewhere other than in front. Internal doesn't seem to actually need much consideration *if* there's enough venting space in the chimney. In my latest build, I only had half-height (+the sides of the peak) vents for my chimney, and it wasn't venting quite enough, but removing the half walls, thus making it a full height vent, was plenty. So, the game seems to take into account how much air it can move out at once.

EDIT: If I remember tomorrow, I'll grab a screenshot of my usual early-game chimney, but it's way too late now, and I need to head to bed.

This, it helps with lighting as well. You can simply vent the roof if you want a way to exhaust the smoke. Just raise the crown of the roof with the short post pieces and your good.
