I actually had pretty much the same thing happen to me, and through some very bad decisions of mine I kept dying and dying over and over again. The last time I just was clicking the "Take all" button when I got killed by a wolf.
Woke up in my bed and was surprised I was encumbered... I had everything still on me.
Technically I didn't cheat, but the game did it.
I wasn't going to cry about it and went on my merry way... ;)
its your game and you decide what you gonna do
so
its up to you - if you just want to retreive your stuff its fine to use cheats imho
no one has the right to judge you for the decision youve made
i also use cheats for creative builds in a "creative game" and only for that
i still got my survival game
The only real cheating I don't like seeing are when I see people on multiplayer twinking themselves with gear from another toon from another world. Just gear up like the rest of the players.
The rest, sure kinda cheese, but who cares in a single player world. My latest toon has been using dwarf spawner to farm weapons skill points in my permadeath world. All of his skill are much higher than my other ones were at the same stage in game, so better dps. Better survivability. Cheating? Cheese? I don't know, don't care. Single player game, I will play it how I want.
If that was the case then the only person who can answer your question is you.
Do you feel like you cheated yourself out of any feeling of enjoyment you might have found from getting your stuff back through the normal mechanics of the game?
If so then you cheated.
Was any possible enjoyment that you would have received from getting your stuff the normal way already outweighed by the feeling of frustration of so many failed attempts?
If so then you didn't cheat.
Again it is something only you can answer if you were solo, as in that case, no one else's opinion matters.
-Bone Mass ability
-Bringing level 2 wolves outside of your base
-Dev commands to retrieve dead body, especially if it was lost due to broken mechanics
-Metal chest or pants
-Poison resistance potions
-Frost resistance potions (once you have the frost gear its cheating)
-Heavy shields
-Heavy weapons
-Kiting with bow or killing anything besides drakes with the bow basically
-Sniping with bow while sneaking
If you were wearing the belt (that allows you to carry more weight) when you died, then that will also affect the "quick-grab" ability and you will have to stop and open the tombstone and take your things back one at a time, and unfortunately, many times this means you are likely going to get attacked by anything close by, especially if you didn't let some time pass (sleep) to allow the critters to (hopefully) disperse and wander away from your loot....
Your loot doesn't "expire" it will stay there indefinitely until you go back and get it, so usually a good idea to sleep to advance time, then get your rested bonus and eat your best foods, then do a completely naked deathrun... bring one frost resist potion and drink it when you get to the snow to give you the frost protection but also have empty inventory when you arrive, click and grab your loot and keep on running until you are safe.
Of course using the console commands is "cheating" but it doesn't affect anyone but yourself.
It is cheating. The game mechanics are NOT broken in this case. You can obtain your stuff the intended and usual way, if you so desire and if you do it the right way.
But I'm still not going to judge @Ghost, because they were doing it for them personally on a local world. It's their world, they can do with it whatever they want.
It's still not the intended way to play the game and you CAN play the game the intended way. There's nothing broken (except for very few stuck cases and tombstones in trees, that were fixed).
I mean, why can't people accept themselves that they did cheat? There's nothing wrong with that? Why do they have to disguise it behind a weak "the game is broken" when it is clearly not.
In my case, the game cheated for me, but I wasn't going to cry foul about that. So I accepted that my body returned this time through a cheat, even though I had retrieved it the intended way literally over a hundred times before and after that.
There was never any doubt I could NOT retrieve my body through regular game mechanics.
But, again, do what you want in your own world. It is yours.
