What is this pink portal thing?

Off in the distance, I can see what looks like a large pile of wood/antlers and it glows pink. It is surround my at least a dozen greydorfs and if I manage to kill some, it looks like more just portal in. As none of my shields (round/tower) do a damn thing against brutes, I die horribly every time.

Once you have a good supply of bronze you can switch to the sconces to save on resin. (They hold more and burn much longer). You'll still need graydwarf eyes to make portals and for Eye scream.

If you live in or near the black forest you will never EVER have a shortage of greydwarf eyes....

generally living in or right next to the black forest is a good idea, as even late game you'll occasionally want copper/bronze for various things and its generally more forgiving to build in and a better border zone than building in the plains....swamp and mountain are terrible for bases due to unremovable trees or no growing allowed
