You are on the right path, now you'll only have to find the best place to put those flaming arguments. Sometimes you just have to get to the heart of the matter.
Another point, if you are dying a lot, then maybe you need somewhat better gear and/or food. Also, try to lure a few of them away from the others so you don't get swarmed.
Well, I have the best gear possible ATM. I dont have the 10 parts for the forge, and finding blones to upgrade things is near impossible. SO 3-Star is wear I'm at.
In that case, finding that sweet spot and hitting at a distance might be one of your better strategies. Hit and run tactics are also a possibilty in this game. Just don't aggro too many of the mobs at the same time. And don't worry, in no time at all you'll just laugh at the graydwarves when they come.
Avoid destroying the spawner if you can. Mark it on the map and go around it. A spawner is a great way to skill-up on your weapons of choice while gathering all the wood and resin you want.
And shooting greydwarfs as quick as they spawn (without hitting the spawner) makes a nice, relaxing twitch game within the game.
You can start with the bow as soon as you have a good-enough rate of fire and accuracy to keep them from reaching your position. For melee, you want at least a good shield and mace, sword or ax. Or maybe you prefer to rely on a knife and agility. Either way, keep your portal close.
