getting rid of junk
Throwing junk to the ground doesn't help because the junk stays forever and next time you get too close, you pick it back up.

Why don't items decay on the ground? This is the first game ever where you can leave a pile of meat on the ground for infinity. The point of storage boxes is usually to prevent that decay, but in his game, you could literally never use a box and just have a yard full of piles. So that stack of 50 pine cones? It's YOURS FOREVER. LOVE IT.

Junk items do disappear, however, they don't have to be in your vincinity.

Meaning, if you drop junk items just outside the walls of your main base, they will remain there forever.
If you however sail to the ocean and jump everything overboard, at some point they'll vanish. Good thing is you can't pick them up anyway.

If you're too impatient to wait for that, simply use the devcommand: "Removedrops" as it will erase everything you dropped at the ground. And when I say "everything", I mean everything, so be careful if / when to use it.

Stuff will despawn eventually if its away from your base. Just take the pile out with you on your next trip and dump it sometime before you need the inventory space back.

To be more precise, as long as you drop them to the ground close by a workbench or similar, they won't decay.

You don't need to sail out to sea to make them disappear, just go to a location that is not too close to anything that you have built and drop the junk. Just stay away for a few in-game days and that should do the trick.

It doesn't matter if you are close or not. It will despawn after a few ingame days if there is no player build structures around (workbenches, campfires, torches etc).

@OP: There is a thing you will be able to craft later that will help you to get rid of unwanted junk. I don't want to say too much to spoil it for you if you still didn't discover it.
I had one rock on the shore near my base where the sea was really deep so i threw all unwanted junk there. I actually called that Junk Deep Point :)

Don't throw pine cones away! Plant them instead, you need wood. As for the junk, do as the guys above recommend.

I wish you could just put things in the fire to get rid of them.

There is something you can build to get rid of them, but we don't want to make spoiler.

Work benches protect the area from item decay, just as they protect it from monster spawns.
Walk away from base and discard your trash. There is also a lightning trash bin for the express purpose of zapping items into dust.

Don’t forget about the Obliterator. It was added to the game for that purpose. I believe certain items put in it give back certain resources too. Like coal.

You could also build your own city dump to manage waste just like in real life. First survival game where waste management is a thing 10/10

Take your trash to the end of your doc and chuck it into the ocean like the lord intended.

Then is disappears.

Dig a diggy-diggy hole away from base and just drop stuff in it. The obliterator works too (once you have all the mats to make one) but make sure you build that away from base too. Bad stuff happens.

My obilterator is inside my main base just far enough away from any other structures that its not a problem. That way I can take the coal out of the obliterator and take it inside where my smelter and blast furnace are.

Guys... be a little bit more exact...the only thing that matters is Workbenchrange.

Items disappear when they are not in range of a workbench.

If u throw items outside your base and they are still in range of a workbench they will not disappear.

There is also giant trashbin u can craft from thunderstone that converts any item into cole.

Also whats meight be trash in early game is good for mid/late game. Example: Eyes.. yea hundrets of eyes you dont have a use for in the beginnging are usefull for icecream and portals in mid/lategame.
