Character name needlessly censored
I logged on yesterday to find my user name censored. Unless there is some new slang around the name "Scooter", I don't understand why my name now appears as "S******". Anyone else having this issue and is there a work around to either get the name uncensored on my private dedicated server, or change my character's name without starting a new character.

Hi! The censorship filter for character names is something which is required for the Microsoft side of the game. It was not intended to be enabled for the Steam version, and should be disabled soon!
The censorship filter should also be more sensitive after the fix, so that names like Scooter won't be censured.

cooter is slang for vagina. It always has been.

But this shows why censorship is so stupid. Its like in dark souls if you name your character knight, it gets censored to K***ht online. God forbid you might offend someone cause that word has ♥♥♥ smack dab in the middle. OH THE HORROR!

I get why they would censor certain words, I really do. They want their game to be family friendly and all that. But my god games need to fix whatever they are using to censor things, because its broken and ultimately hurts the player experience. At a certain point, you mind as well just stop censoring all together. If people are being offensive then just don't play with them.

And "Scooter" is a name that has nothing to do with that...

They could just make the filter optional.
btw about Dark Souls, the filter there is even more ridiculous becasue capital letters don't trigger it. So knight gets censored but the N-word will not if the N was capital.

Just use this to make a new name:

As for name change -- not sure if it works anymore:

Other option is this:

Yeah, I understand that "Cooter" is slang, but my name has more to do with a moped than a vagina and being censored like this is stupid. I would understand if I was playing on a public server to have it censored, but being I never am, it's really frustrating. If I were on a public server and someone saw S****** as a name, the last thing anyone would assume my character name would be is Scooter.

Some games censor other stupid things. If you are numbering things numerically you have to spell Sixty Nine out instead of using numbers.

As far as I can tell censorship on the Steam version was not intended. It will be rolled back. The censorship was required on the Microsoft side when enabling crossplay.

We had a church going secretary at work who changed all the petcocks in the parts department to drain valves since she didn't want to say that word.

Funny really.
Showed where her mind was ha ha ha

The profanity filter appears to be a new thing but I can't see anywhere to switch it off.
One of my characters is called "Lassie" and the 3 characters after L now appear as ***.
Bit annoying.

its censored because the game really can't tell if your name is "scooter" or "URAcooter" or "iluvcooter" or "scooterminusS" or any number of other variations.

"but i meant it as the vehicle" - how is the game supposed to distinguish between that or any of the others?

Sure, it blocks some legitimate names. Bummer. Come up with a new one and carry on? I certainly appreciate steps taken to avoid seeing names like "dickriderpro."

In the hotfix being worked on, this is one of the changes:

* Disabled in-game profanity filter (was enabled by mistake on Steam version)
More info will be in the patchnotes.

somewhere the game just has a massive list of words in a file, that are considered offensive, and it's just outright pattern matching.

As one person above already said, it won't match to a version of the word with an uppercase letter because they didn't add that variant. Or variants with dollar signs instead of S's, or 1 instead of I's. It's just super lazy censorship.

And bizarrely, these files are usually stored as plaintext. So people can open one of these files, and then just be utterly gobsmacked by a super concentrated list of utterly offensive words. I worked for a server rental company, and on more then one occasion we had a parent stumble on these files while setting up a server for their kids... and... well... there's just... not a lot... you can say to an angry parent when they find these lists (they sometimes have thousands of offensive words, sexual, racial, etc).
