How "skippable" is iron armour?
I skipped bronze armour and I'm about to do the same with iron (I'm a bit short on iron, not so much on bronze now). My only way to advance is to sail far after Bonemass so I wanted more seasoned players to save me a lot of progress loss in case I'm going to make a mistake. Is it viable to defeat Bonemass that far away, with lvl4 troll armour, without commiting unawared seppuku?

I can get +100hp and stamina with food, but dodging with controller is difficult (too many buttons at the same time can lead to unwanted actions like sneaking or disabling auto loot instead of dodging).

If you don't mind your clothes clashing a bit and not having the sneak bonus, you can always just use troll armor and pants with a higher def helm. The helms will give you higher def without giving you any of the heavy armor speed penalties.
If I were a dev I would be super sad about how people want to skip content. The devs should think about this for a bit.

First four bosses can all be done with nothing more than troll armour and patience.

Haven't even tried Yag with just troll armour, don't want to risk the stat loss lol but you can do the plains just fine with it up to Yag for sure.
I've played characters where I skipped bronze and iron, wearing a troll set until the mountains when I got some silver and made the wolf set. I think once I just wore troll armor until getting flax/linen to make the padded set. It's doable, sure. And no, you don't need to grind skills to big levels to do it. Just play smart and it can work, though it can get a little iffy in the mountains occasionally. Most if you get Hunted--better have your bonemass skill ready or able to find a perch where the wolves can't reach you. Wolves can one-shot you in troll armor. Have to be prepared.
I usually skip iron armor and go straight for wolf stuff, simply because bronze is easy to farm and is usually on my "mainland" so I don't have to sail for it. Iron is typically far more of a pain in the ass. Besides, getting iron gets easier after bonemass anyway and there are other sources of it later.

On the other hand, an iron mace is a very good idea if you plan to melee bonemass. Just don't bother parrying him; he doesn't recoil or stagger.
Lately I've been heading into the mountains with a root chest piece, troll pants, and an iron helmet. The root chest piece lasts all the way into mistlands (not recommended for ice caves or Yagluth). Iron atgeir does a great job of keeping the wolves off though.
OK, so if u want to skip iron armor, you are going to have a TON of trouble with the wolves and golems...and MODER
bonemass is actually super easy, just iron mace and have poison resistance and some healing meads with full troll set upgraded and he's a cakewalk.

the issue isn't killing the boss tho, it's the raids that come after.

it introduces flying mobs to the raids which mean death to all outside animals.

this games progression is really "should i stay or should i go"

wolves are easy without iron armor you just have to be using the correct weapons and avoid getting surrounded.

Iron is the highest demand metal in game, so skipping iron armor is very worthwhile. Focus on getting the essential forge upgrades, iron boat, iron pickaxe and an iron mace, then go bash down the swamp boss.

Most of the mountain hazards can be avoided by adventuring during the day and gating home at night. The enemy spawns can be avoided while harvesting silver by simply digging straight down, which will either block their pathing or trap them in gbj to make exploration safer.

Once the silver starts piling in there will be more than you know what to do with. Feel free to skip directly to silver gear and max it out.

Skip the heavy armour. Troll armour then tree armour which has poison resist, The cave armour is good too for the speed and it has a little better armour then the tree stuff but I usually switch between the tree and cave armour depending on which biom I go to, After that its padded armour, The heavy armour has to much issue with running out of stamina Your almost best to skip it as it will kill you if your not taking stamina potions. I find even if you use stamina potions the optimal time to drink sometimes does not happen. The heavy armour seems to have killed me more than save me.

PS you only need to run faster than your buddy to live. LOL.
