If you gonna use mods, use them with r2modman, it makes the whole modding easy and can easily switch back to vanilla. Like the others, I recommend 1 full clear on Vanilla and THEN experiment with mods.. cuz really my wife and I completed our 2nd playthrough too easily with heavy modding and it just didn't feel the same..
clearly you didnt mod properly, as the mods out basically make an entire new difficult game full of content and depth which vanilla lacks severely

Like others have said, play the vanilla as far as you can and if you need to make the game easier then reach out for mods. You may find challenging over easy to be your liking.

1. Get ThunderStore mod manager. You can download well over 1100 mods directly from the mod manager, it will notify you if updates are available to mods and install them for you if you so desire. You can keep profiles, and you can individually en- and disable mods. IMHO it's the best mod manager out there.
It's *so* much more comprehensible than Nexus' effort, possibly helped by it being focused purely on Unity game modding. The most impressive feature is its ability to generate short text codes that share all the mods and configurations so a group can easily sync up.

Id just start with valheim plus and tweak the game to your liking. I personally liked the build mode that plus has, plant anything, and the rest i left vanillla.

Play it in VR, nothing is more immersive.

the raftmod is prob the only mod that i enjoy
I use mods now, and I really enjoy the ones I use and feel they make the game that much more enjoyable for me.

With that said, I actually played through twice without mods and I'm glad I did. Vanilla is actually a great game and then mods added some freshness to it for another play through.

But if you really want some on your first try, just sort them by most downloads all time, then most recently updated. read them and find the ones that interest you.

Me telling you to get say Clutter will mean nothing to you if you don't really want to spend hours building and exploring is your focus.

BepInEx - mod to be able to use the follwing mods:
- unrestricted portals (abe to carry ores trough portals)
- AutoMapPins (shows ores in range)
- ClockMod (ingame time)

Standalone:
- HD Texture Mod by Willybach

That's what i use, nothing game breaking just good QOL mods.

- Craft from any container
- Smart containers (auto stack the same items in whatever chest)

These two saves a lot of headache without cheating.

Unrestricted portals is not a "QOL mod". It's literally cheating.

Just play it through first. Then maybe with rl friends/family or "friends" if possible.

Then do mods.

Or jump right in with mods from the start. try Valheim +

Best post here.

First playthrough? Maybe Valheim Plus. It's the most updated and helpful without killing your computer and you can use some of it's QoL settings to help with stuff that drives you insane. Once you've conquered the game, Epic Loot adds a bit of fun to it.

Can I recommend no mods whatsoever? I just really like the vanilla experience myself. :) If you just got started, you may not need it yet.

Absolutely. I think you should not mod this game until you've played it for a while, and I don't mean an hour or two. Give it a solid 10 hours, or even better? Play until you defeat the first 2 or 3 bosses (first one's too soon and too easy), build a ship and explore a little (And I do mean a ship - not a raft. You'll thank me later.), build a fairly large base, explore multiple biomes, get into some tough fights, plant a small garden, make some bronze tier gear. Once you've done all that then you'll know if you want to change the experience or not.

I haven't used mods in over 250 hours of play. They're not needed (yes, folks, even the most basic and minor QoL mod is still not needed) and some will actually ruin the experience.

Well, performance mods might be needed in some circumstances if they make the difference between playable and not.

No it's not! It's how it should be.

Why can't we bring ores trough the portal? yet we can use the gear/weapons made of them trough it. So restricting ores is crap and fits nicely into a QoL upgrade.

And crafting from any container is not cheating? completely skipping the use of your inventory bypassing weight and max slots and even stamina usage when loaded up to heavy? Haha

you can take your weaponry through portals because the point of not allowing metal through portals is so you always have a reason to run and travel long distances on boat/land. Taking ore through portals is most definitely more than a QoL mod, you’re basically just ignoring half the challenge in the game. You wouldn’t ever be able to use portals if you couldn’t take your weapons through it. It’s a compromise to keep the challenge of hauling materials while still not making it a constant chore to do anything in the game.
