A later patch supposedly stops them from despawning after starting to tame them.
2 Star wolves only spawn at night. Finding at night where you encounter wolves, especially packs of them simply increases the chance you'll have a 2 star spawn with them.
Best suggestion is to make a note of the places you notice them at night, kill any spawns just as night is about it hit(this way spawns respawn at night, then kill off spawns asap at night that dont have 2 starts. It may take you many in game nights or just one. Its RNG.
No supposedly. If you trap them and they eat once from food you drop, they'll not despawn.
Again its rng. If you also happen to be doing it on a shallow mountain and not a large one, you might want to consider a better mountain just for the number of potential spawn points.
But again its just random.
True, Im going to move deeper into this mountain, its a pretty big one and ive only searched a bit of it. Thank you :)
My play style tends to be seed hopping style. I have 1 boss trophy hanging server. Then I have 1 seed for one specific biome (difficulty tier if you will) farming and exploration. I have then another seed for specifically fighting the boss of that teir/biome(usually easily accessible).
Thus I've tamed wolves across multiple seeds and my experience has been that its very random in when how they'll spawn except that to date I've never has one spawn as just a lone wolf. Not to say it couldnt happen as I believe its a dice roll on spawn at night.
Most have been 2-4 spawns of wolves. Some of the spawn spots also have been in rotation with(and not with) the night spawning werewolves too. I think (again could be wrong) that the devs set specific spawn table types(ie rotation of single multiple werewolve) or other combinations there of. It makes sense as you can also see this with locations that are specific to boars and ones that are able to rotate between boars necks etc and depending on conditions(like there are more neck spawns/respawns during storms).
All in all its just being patient. Good thing is you just need to get one and breed it with your other wolf/wolves until you get a second 2 star to exclusively do 2's only.
All in all patience is one of the key's to Valheim.
Yeah one of the things I love about Valheim is that there is no rush to do anything :D
RNG is RNG. I've done the wolf taming on several of our worlds.
The best one? Finding a 2* the second night of hunting.
The worst one? 186 night hunts before finding a 2*. Yeah, we were swimming in pelts/wolf meat by the end of it. And had a correspondingly low level of sanity, lol.
If you get a 2 star boar farm going where you have your 2 star wolves(seperate pins mind you and done right) you'll have tons and tons of meat for them.
If you also set same said farm in the meadows near the ocean, creek etc where you also see deer and or boar spawn, it'll be a good place for necks too so you can get other meats in a pinch.
But its also usually a good spot for berries in a pinch for boars until you get a good crop farm going in the same place(sans plains stuff mind you since flax and barley cant be groun except in the plains biome.)
I recommend going on yt for some good boar/wolf breeding pens. Most are pretty easy to make so you can produce tons in no time.
Also another benefit of seed hopping and setting up a non combat farm seed is that you'll be only getting the first event to ever spawn so its free meats basically too and you'll not have to eventually worry about aerial event raids against your farm.
For the combat seed that you do for 1 tier each its also not a problem(just breeding tames to build up needs for say killing moder or yagluth or similar if you use the wolf fast kill pack method). Prior to a boss, on such as seed it'll just be the neck/boar event too.
@ Estyn Im currently doing the killing of all the low ones I can find (ive marked where any wolves spawn and if I find a 1* it gets marked as well. The amount of wolf meat and hides is crazy but Thor loves me and gifts lots of coal haha
You definitely don’t want to put your trophies on a seed different from your main one. It’s far better to keep them on the same seed so you can get fuling spawns everywhere at night for easy blackmetal near your base. Plus most raids are only designed for Black Forest/swamp level gear so late game they are just free resources. The initial raid is the most useless since boars are tameable already and easier to farm than other mobs. Late game you’ll definitely be gladder you kept the spawns rather than remove them.
If you more carefully read what I said, I have seeds for each boss fight. Once the boss is -killed- per seed the events upgrade.
Hanging boss trophies is NOT how you trigger the next tier of events. That is factually not how the mechanics of it work. Killing the boss on a seed is how events shift.
Thus I've seeds for each boss completed as I wish.
Nothing lost as you seem to perceive. Multi seed methods as discussed was so that, the OP can in a pinch if needed get other meat if they didnt need/want to deal with higher tier events. Farming seeds thus and boss fighting seeds. So again if resources from a specific tier of events are wanted, one just simply goes and spends time at a base on said tier.
Nothing lost.
Speaking of events, if someone's farms are not carefully done, the bat event can wipe out a boar farm in no time. Thus more planning and building is required for that (ie roofing everything over or using lots of windmills(excessive but some do), and other things.
Nothing wrong with that for someone who wishes to do that, but everyone has different play styles and I was giving suggestions/options for the OP to consider.
And in the post you quoted, I started off about the taming 2 star boars for meat resources. I supplemented that information with the other resources and choices from there...
