Base Repair
I need to repair parts of my base every couple of days. Is this an intended mechanic or did I make my base incorrectly? Anybody have some insight or personal experience in the same thing?

Thanks in advance!

You need a roof

I have roof blocks. Maybe I need to look up details about structures.

One thing I haven't figured out yet is the need for a fire near my bed. The fire can't be under a roof though. I've done some half-building stuff to get one close enough, so I can use my bed.

The fire can be inside. And it doesn't really need a chimney if the roof is high enough. In this shot there is a covered vent in the ceiling above.

This too.

The game should give better hints about this possibility.

I disagree. Smoke should need vented or it should fill the space completely. I don't like that smoke will just vanish into high ceilings, it's unrealistic.

normally a roofed base only requires reapirs, when damages by an enemy
make sure all the walls have the proper roof above to prevent degenerating when it rains

for the roof: its a good choice to have some sort of chimney
at least a roof area thats a bit higher then the main roof to prevent the fire from going low on rainy days

latest variant to guide the smoke outside

and older solution:

both chinmeys are roofed

i think it would not make sense gamewise - as the game will freeze and crash with a room full of smoke

like making a game often requires making decisions between realism and performance

This is not a high realism game.

Fantasy games can still be realistic. Otherwise why have smoke at all? Just add magic fire or warming crytals or magma orbs or whatever.

Easy way to protect your stuff is build a pit house. Dig a hole in the ground about a wall & a half - 2 walls deep, ramp up to the front of make stairs, and slap a roof over each side, connected to the ground, use supports if it is bigger, hearth/fireplace in the centre on the floor. Roof covers the whole thing.

If the building is larger & ceiling is high up enough, you won't even need to vent it at the top, it will just pool up & stay at the top. Tried & tested.

Yo, use the hoe to raise the ground and flatten to just the hight of your floor.

Now place the camp fire on that ground. Level it back down to below the floor. Then place your floor block.

The fire doesnt get destroyed or damage anything.

now make a chimney, and be creative!

My most recent house is a circle, so the chimney is the center roof, and I have logs that were used to support, angled at the top with an opening to let smoke out.

Wow... So much info and help! I REALLY appreciate the images. Sometimes text descriptions just don't form a picture in my head. Those help so much!

Thank you everybody!!!

You've awoken some of the Norse madmen artisan builders, get ready for a good show! I'm still amazed by some of the things people make in this game. Makes my hard-thought-out and seemingly-efficient bases look like shacks.
