One thing I haven't figured out yet is the need for a fire near my bed. The fire can't be under a roof though. I've done some half-building stuff to get one close enough, so I can use my bed.

The Reason you need a roof is that rain degrades wood

I disagree. Smoke should need vented or it should fill the space completely. I don't like that smoke will just vanish into high ceilings, it's unrealistic.
make sure all the walls have the proper roof above to prevent degenerating when it rains
for the roof: its a good choice to have some sort of chimney
at least a roof area thats a bit higher then the main roof to prevent the fire from going low on rainy days
latest variant to guide the smoke outside

and older solution:

both chinmeys are roofed
i think it would not make sense gamewise - as the game will freeze and crash with a room full of smoke
like making a game often requires making decisions between realism and performance
Fantasy games can still be realistic. Otherwise why have smoke at all? Just add magic fire or warming crytals or magma orbs or whatever.
If the building is larger & ceiling is high up enough, you won't even need to vent it at the top, it will just pool up & stay at the top. Tried & tested.
Now place the camp fire on that ground. Level it back down to below the floor. Then place your floor block.
The fire doesnt get destroyed or damage anything.
now make a chimney, and be creative!
My most recent house is a circle, so the chimney is the center roof, and I have logs that were used to support, angled at the top with an opening to let smoke out.
Thank you everybody!!!
You've awoken some of the Norse madmen artisan builders, get ready for a good show! I'm still amazed by some of the things people make in this game. Makes my hard-thought-out and seemingly-efficient bases look like shacks.
