Fcking serpent waits there just next to my corpse lol i ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up rly bad
There is a body retrieval group. They come with you, kick the crap out of whatever killed you and you get your stuff back. Check the groups section i believe. Or someone here can come aid you in your quest to retrieve body and gear.
But unlike other games your corpse will stay there and since Hearth and Homes launched, I believe old death markers remain in place so its possible to go back later and pick it up.
But usually you will see the Serpent swimming upto you, this is your time to check the wind direction and start turning (land mass permitting) and get outta there at full sail, if you wait for it to raise its head out the water and roar..... you are probably too late to out run it unless there is land very nearby
Also, ALWAYS carry 10 wood with you so you can put down a bench as soon as you exit the boat and get onto shore. That way, you can immediately repair your boat anywhere there's land, then when you leave again, just destroy the workbench for the 10 wood and carry on.
First time, I could approach the gravebuoy by paddling backwards, ready to flee full sail in the wind. I couldn't retrieve my corpse, but I could lure the serpent to the coast. I launched a few arrows, and waited for it to return to its spawn location, which allowed me to finally get to the buoy (still seing the beast in the distance).
Second time, I hadn't enough material to build another raft, but I had anticipated better and my gravebuoy was closer to the coast. I could swim to the buoy, take things from it, and sink closer to the coast, at a distance allowing a go-and-return swim.
In both cases, I died several times while adjusting the "strategy", sometimes with another death penalties, sometimes without.
I always keep a chest at the foot of my main spawn bed, with a second set of armour and weapons, with 1 of each food item I am currently using. Keep in mind also, there are no penalties for dying a 2nd time, if you are under "corpse run" conditions, so it pays to try and reclaim ones items as fast as possible, even if it takes multiple attempts.
