Do you need steady challenges to stay engaged? ... Pick "Don't Starve"
You play to relax/chill/build? ... Pick "Valheim"
I'd suggest you be careful with a suggestion like that. valve employees will be looking at your refund history and if you are using the system to trail version games with the express purposes of just testing or completing them and have no real explanation why you want to refund, you could find your ability to refund future games a lot more difficult as you're abusing why the refund feature is there.
i understand your point, i would suggest a similar thing myself, but there are additional concerns that would of stopped me recommending the same approach unfortunately, as i wouldn't want to get other users in trouble.
i've got valheim on my list like i do with a lot of games i'm looking at. i've played a lot of similar survival games, most recent is stranded deep. My research suggests there is an element of action to the adventure in this game as much as it is survival. right now it's in my cart along with a few other survival games of a similar type, but i just need to make sure of a few things so i know i won't be refunding.
Valheim has a lot more going for it and feels a lot more "finished" and fun to play in its current state, honestly. I'd just buy that, unless you have a friend excited about DST, or your PC is a potato and can't run Valheim.
Clunky controls only when you do something foolish like play DST with a controller :P
There are also a lot of QoL mods that can help streamline the controls even more (my favorites are Grid placement and ActionQueue)
Single player experience is still solid in DST. And DST has a lot of content and stuff to explore and do , bosses to kill etc.
As for potato PCs depending on what kind of potato we are talking about Don't Starve Together might have issues too depending on world size and if caves are enabled.
There were few updates with changes that made DST slightly more newbie friendly.
(Being able to swap characters in mid playthrough for very low cost is one of those changes.)
Also DST is only somewhat burtal-ish on default world settings.
You have insane amount of options before starting your world that greatly impact overall difficulty. You have control over almost every little aspect of your world from resources to enemies and worldgen and its features, events, enviromental hazards etc etc. And some of these changes are retroactive too.
You can pretty much make DST as easy/forgiving or as hard/unforgiving as you want it to.
Also Endless mode exists and is suggested when playing solo. (World doesn't reset when every player or just you if solo dies.)
DST is far more challenging and requires a lot more thought than Valheim, it's fully fleshed out and has a lot of depth. The original game is also worth playing though the Co-op side of DST is very enjoyable. Both are good though & hardly comparable as Valheim is more a traditional crafting RPG, whereas DS is full-on survival experience. I would recommend both, you can both DS games pretty cheap.
I'd definitely say Valheim. I like the gameplay better, the visuals are much more pleasing for me (that cartoonish style the Don't Starve games have really isn't my cup of tea either), and the setting is way more interesting. Valheim is less about survival and more about exploration and building, which massively appeals to me.
My hours are 942 vs. a few (DS is on GOG and I can't be bothered to launch Galaxy just to check), the former going up as I type this.
