Recent changes to H&H really gave troll armor a purpose in that it makes a good transition armor for entering the crypts to obtain the cores so you can make bronze. Before H&H troll armor just seemed a waste of time to me.
But Root armor just does not seem to have any reason to build it. Iron is better for the mountains and you don't need poison resist much outside of the swamps. Not sure if the poison resist stacks with the potion so it is good to wear the mask when doing the oil blobs? Not sure, haven't got that far with it. But it's weak to fire so the plains might not be the best place to use it. It is much easier to get a full set of iron stuff than root stuff. If root had better armor than iron but its bonuses and weaknesses just don't make it worth it beyond using for serpent hunting or going back into the swamp for resources after you are done there... and at that point you may as well use wolf or padded.
They really should come up with a reason to use it, right now it just feels like it is there as an option rather than having its own purpose in progression.
I suppose the best thing about it is if your world really is rough RNG wise for iron crypts and you end up going to a lot of swamps and find no iron but get abominations. In that case it would be logical to make it... certainly you at least want the mask for the poison resist early on.
Do you have an opinion on that?
I can understand that you look at it from a perspective based on usefulness after spending 1,647 hours in the game (wtf). Through the eyes of a new player, at least from what I could observe when playing with various friends, troll armor was a pleasant and motivating undertake. The party had to somewhat prepare for the fight, get food and set out on a journey. I'd even say that the fights were quite challenging for very new players to this genre and therefore provding a very rewarding sense of accomplishment.
But back to the main topic about root armor: Yes, it may not be "required" to be in the game but I also think it's a nice addition, just like troll armor because of the above reasons.
In terms of usefulness, the additional bow damage multiplier is kinda cool but doesn't really fit thematically. The bow bonus could have been on deer hide instead as a reprsentation of "mastering the art of hunting". The root armor on the otherhand could have had an affect related to "roots" as in a mechanic that would slow or bind enemies. Aesthically speaking, the armor fits into this game's universe really well though.
Only thing I kinda don't like about it is the quantity of drops and items required. Why is it dropping 5 at once? Could have been like 1-3 and also requiring less to craft.
As for the mask, you're probably better off with using the poison resistance mead instead since resistances don't stack and the mead actually gives you higher poison resistance than the mask (75% vs 50%).
So for Swamps, you could probably go with iron helmet and greaves + root harnesk. If fully upgraded, should be enough to even skip silver armor and go straight for padded. Could just craft the wolf/lox cape for the frost resistance.
