If they are to strong you are to weak...
As for the gear for plains. You can go with fully upgraded root armor set and an iron buckler or silver shield. Root armor works great in plains. Mosquitoes deal 10 dmg if they hit you without blocking and an iron buckler will block all the damage from fulings.
If you have tamed wolves, bring them with you on your raids to goblin villages. They are working good against goblins. They suck against loxes and mosquitoes, so you will have to tank mosquitoes and keep your distance from loxes.
A friend and I raided a goblin village last night with seven 1-star wolves. We could just stand and watch wolves doing our job. Luckily, there were no berserkers and shamans so one wolf even survived the raid. They killed 15-20 goblins with just a little help from us.
Also a good advice is to have ooze bombs for groups of goblins. It will not kill them, but will make a good amount of damage over time.
They do, if they don't attack you, then it's a bug :)
I don't find DS that painful, they were in the beginning, but this game sends you on a learning curve too.
Everytime you meet a new mob, then you have to figure out how to handle them, and when you do, then it's easy as long as you've made sure to have the health for it and armor in time.
Make sure to build a kitchen and make recipies for better food and advance your mining to get better armor and you'll get there in time :)
Deathsquitos are easy, just wait for them to charge, block, and immediately hit back. They have 10 health. They only do massive damage if you're wearing subpar armor. Fulings can be dangerous in groups, so careful fighting more than 1-2 at a time. Those tar blobs can be tough, but fortunately they don't wander randomly. Be careful getting close to any tar pits. Use poison resist mead. Don't get hit by their big chain splatter attack.
At this point you have already strong weapons, armor and food.
I handle Growths (called oil or tar blobs here) with stealth bow attacks.
With draugr fang and needle arrows you can kill them with one shot.
Same applies to non-starred Fulings and Fuling Shamans.
I got taken by 2 Dskeeters when I went through a portal. My fault, I didn't eat and was at 25 HP. Another reason I go through fully fed and weapons raised now. Live and learn (or rather, die and learn).
My words of advice are: 1) Keep your camera angle up. This will aide you greatly in seeing the Deathsquitos from a distance. And 2) Strafe is your friend against the ranged Fulings. You don't even have to sprint to avoid their spear throws if you're Strafing.
Good luck!
Growths (tar mobs) are not that tough. Simply pull them, one at a time, with a bow, back up some and when they land after hopping they will spew. Simply strafe as they land, angling closer, they will miss you completely without even sprinting, and you can smack them silly when you get to them.
When new to the plains, don't sprint in wildly because you will invariably pull too many mobs and easily get overwhelmed. Take your time, stop and scan.
I always felt that was the lesson to be learned in the swamp. Hence its upgrade in difficulty.
i.e. Deathsquito can't one-shot you through bronze armour, even zerkers do only 45 damage through silver armour (which is 1/3 of your hp at the first encounter)
haven't seen 2-starred club fuling - anyone tested it? will it do 150+ dmg through silver?
