can i claim troll cave?

i disposed 1 star troll in troll cave and want to ocupy it, does workbench prevents troll spawning in its area if i build it in a cave?

Troll wont respawn here anyway I just get the yellow mushrooms from their cave.
You could use debug mode free build to get creative in there.

You could "claim" it in the way that you build a workbench near the entrance, add some defensive structures as well as a wall and a roof around it to do basic crafting; then enter the cave and build a campfire there.

While the troll won't spawn there anyway, you do have a place where you can rest - albeit for low comfort - or to retreat into when you're chased by monsters.

Inside the cave you can only build 3 things - Log seat, camp fire, & cooking station. But you can go in there for a short rested buff if needed.

A lot of my first black forest outposts are in troll cave entrances.
The overhang is high enough not to smoke you out. Lots of room.
Just put a fence and door in front and it is done.

mouth of a troll cave is a convenient spot to build quick shelter if you gotta make landfall late in a black forest

I was wondering the same thing about the crypts in the swamp, thinking about clearing one out and turning it into my own swamp base. Thanks for the clarifications here; now I won't waste my time on that project that won't work.

Although you can still use them as emergency storage sites if they have several chests that are not too far from entrance. Troll caves can get at least two chests at max.

and you can build right up against a crypt just fine, so that's an indestructible wall for free

if you just want to stop anything from spawning in a crypt or troll cave you can drop a campfire or two.

Also gives you some light and a comfort 3 :)

Once cleared there is no respawn of mobs in either the crypt or cave, only mushrooms. After the H&H update crypts got the single skeleton guard respawning outside every few days. I'm assuming normal anti-spawn items will prevent that.
Here's a cave I completely dug out from its surroundings. The 'magical' entry into the cave continues to work even from below. In this example it'd be easy to build a small camp/base underneath and access the cave interior when you need to go afk. What I don't know is if trolls with the tree trunk club can penetrate the permanent cave structure with their AOE like they are supposed to be able to do with regular terrain walls.
