Base defence
I just started playing this game, absolutely love it so far.
I've seen several posts about how people get their base raided and destroyed by trolls and other mobs.

How soon do such raids start happening? I'm on day 20 and recently started to use bronze. Am I safe for now or should I start constructing defense walls and trenches?

And also separate question: can your base get raided while you're far away from it? If yes, how do you defend it in this case?

Killing the bosses is what triggers raids, although I think you can get the real easy one of just some animals attacking before you kill the first boss.

They do not occur when you are not at your base. They can only occur where you are at.

As far as when you should build defenses, if you value what you've done, then defend it. Don't build some epic structure and then complain that it gets destroyed because you didn't defend it.

:)

Wow, how did you get bronze on day 20? I was still just hunting/building at that time.

As >< V >< above says. I will just add. That trolls don't start until after you kill Elder. My first troll raids only had 2 trolls. Then I had 3. Not sure how many I get now as my base is big enough with trees outside everywhere that I may not see them all. Or they just may be in the woods meandering. I believe the more trolls you kill, the more trolls you get during the raid.

Best defense is a moat or to raise a stone wall all around. Moat should be 4 to 5 picks deep. You don't want to be swimming in it really. I found just 4 meters wide was good enough. They get stuck if they step in it.

Any structures you don't want hit should be 8 meters away from outside of moat. 10 meters would be better. Cause trolls with a log can reach 8 meters. Make a path with flooring across moat to cross. Leave about a 2 meter or more gap to jump across, cause mobs can't navigate over gaps.

Most general raids (excluding you are being hunted and 1 other) only occur at a base. You have to have 3 things in the area for it to qualify as a base. These include campfire, benches, portals and a bed. so i campfire and 2 benches qualifies. Or 3 benches. or 1 fire, 1 bench, 1 portal.. etc.....

I also believe this.

I had my current world's only troll raid when I already had a very good knife that killed trolls in mere seconds. I ended up getting six trolls during the raid, when it's always been two or three in the past when I've killed them slower.

And to complete the answer to the OP's last question: no, your base cannot be raided while you're away.
The raids will only spawn where you are, if their conditions are met there.

I don't have a moat around my base, and even when I had stakewall instead of stone walls around it nothing ever managed to break through the wall.
Key is to leave the base instantly when a raid starts, as it takes a few moments for the mobs to show up.
("Cold wind from the mountains" I would expect is an exception to that last bit. I've not had it yet in this world.)

In my opinion the best is the moat (or lifting the ground with a hoe around but for this is needed a lot of stones)... natural ground cannot be destroyed by enemies, and they cannot jump. You don't have to build the wall above, a palisade is enough and it is repaired faster if necessary, but of course if you like walls more do it when you will have stonecutter. And when the trolls come, I always leave the base and fight them outside the fence... after all, they don't come to destroy the house, but to kill me.
'Friends' from plains can easily destroy stone walls, not only trolls, but they are not that huge so moat is enough :)

You won't get raid events when you're not at your base (except for "You are being hunted" which comes later). But wandering mobs can attack your base. I was sailing home with a load of ore and as I approached I saw a troll had come out of BF and was rampaging around my base (which was probably a little too close to the BF at the time).
Thanks everyone, some really useful information here!
At least now I'm relieved that I'm still quite far from being demolished by trolls, but I'll definitely start planning my defense :)

you should start building defense soon, 3 raid trolls are not a joke

Sometimes the best thing to do is just lead them away from the base and take a death if you can't avoid their attacks. You can wait out the raid event and then try to kill them. If you fail and you're far enough away from the base then they most likely won't go back and destroy it. Otherwise you can take five(?) deaths in a row and the enemies should automatically despawn. I had trolls tearing into my base once when I had no way of taking them down so I just quickly took the deaths to get rid of them.

just to clarify, 2 trolls come during the ground shaking event. if you kill one another will take it's place only if the raid is still occurring. raids last 2 mins, so you could potentially get as many trolls as you can kill during that time. the number of trolls is not dependent on the number of trolls you've killed -outside- the raid event (which is how i read the comment, and not necessarily how the comment was meant).
also to clarify, if a raid occurs at a 'base' and you then leave that area, the raid pauses. it can go on indefinitely, until you return to the area and the 2 mins run out. if players are far enough away then the mobs will 'freeze' in time... meaning they won't wreck your stuff. but if you are still too close those mobs can remain active. this is how mobs in general work, they 'activate' based on your proximity. so if you leave your base, say for instance by portalling to the other side of the map, you can potentially halt an event.
events occur based on certain conditions: bosses you've defeated, structures in your vicinity, and amount of time since the last raid (checked every 45 min).

Your base won't be attacked while you are away, it is based on your location, and what you have killed.

As for moats, 4M wide, and at least as deep with straight walls... no areas where you can push yourself forward and climb and you will be all good.... oh, and keep whatever you build 10m from the moat, trolls can still hit inside with things from the moat.

...except for the Wind drakes, but they are a 2 shot wonder when you get your bow skill up.

Like the moat first, then when i get iron I build a stone wall my side of the moat. For me it looks better and its easy to run across the top of the wall to snipe with the bow.

Wall moats are ugly. Just build a wall some spikes and defend the holes. I beat the whole game and the best the trolls got was breaking down a easily replaced wall.

If you zoom in you can also see I built small ramparts to stand on and shoot at enemies at the most used avenues of approach.

My base is pretty ugly in comparison to some of these but it has worked so far. Just a little moat (just needs to be chest high on a troll basically), and a stone wall. In my case it's on the ocean so things can swim up but honestly it's not that big a deal. There are some things that will be able to get over the moat, but for the most part it's held up and I'm on the last biome now.
