Reinforced chests
I've noticed that youtube videos rarely show anyone using the reinforced chests. Is that just because they've recently been improved and there was no point before? is there some reason not to use them? They take up more space, and it's hard to justify using the iron for them before you've geared up, but other than that, they seem like a solid improvement to me.

or you could peacefully take down a tree or two for wooden chest
thats my take on it anyways. just way easier for slightly less space
Yeah, it seems like a big step up in resources and effort from the wooden chest to the reinforced. I've been playing for dozens of hours and just now got around to it. There are so many uses for iron, I didn't even consider making reinforced chests until I'd already collected 100's of the stuff and used it for equipment upgrades.

After you deafeat Yagluth, you'll find Black Metal anywhere you want it.. even at your spawn point in the world.. at night. ;)

Indeed. The reason many players have separate boss hunting and homesteading worlds, I suspect.

I've got loads of black metal chests on shelves.

Might not be the best thread for that

I tend to only use the larger chests to hold armor sets...and I agree, having iron come in the progression when it does, makes enlarging your already existing storage a major grind...especially if shelving has already been constructed to hold the 3 high columns.

I just adopt a system of having the smaller storage chests hold the maximum amount and then I move to stacked dedicated columns of chests outside along the walls of my enclosures. At the moment, I have my overflows of Dwarf Eyes, Resin and Deer Trophies outside in stacked columns...and just moved the 20 million deer hides and 50 million Troll hides I have directly to the 'recycler'...

I like the larger chests for Armor since the GUI structure has columns of 3+ to allow me to graphically store my armor in a human form: hats on top, cape next, then chest armor and leg armor at the bottom of the stack...

Modded chest(and inventory) slot capacity up a touch.
Enabled pull & push from chests for crafting.

Life is too short to be juggling inventory items.

On a side note, why do we have both slot & weight limits in the inventory?
Can I not put flowers & ore into the same magical pocket?!?
Seems highly redundant to me; like the devs couldn't decide on a design constraint so they put both in.

The logistical benefit of having extra slots in the same box never seemed worth the upgrade after the first time trying it.

To make basic chests I can pick up a few fallen branches, punch a few twig-like trees or chop down as much beech as I want without ever having to worry about replanting. Even if the run between my base and nearest wood line gets too long, chances are that one of my portals will take me next to another forest that is ripe for hours of chopping.

With reinforced chests I first need fine wood which much more quickly makes you search further and further the more you get, with the most bountiful source being in the plains. At least you can replant birch now but this only takes a similar amount of time in a best case scenario where you planned ahead.
But then I also need to get some iron and like all newly collected metals it is useless without also getting some more coal too. And you can measure that time loss directly against your rate of progression because iron is needed for gear improvements up until the point that you're maxed out for the current content.

As long as your chests aren't placed in the way of danger and you have a system, there isn't a notable difference between having one big box or multiple smaller boxes. I can imagine that it might be less disorienting for someone using a controller for navigation but that is about it.

I will still make a few reinforced chests but only in some decorative spots. I don't want my living space to look like a postal depot.

I only use reinforced once i reach iron stage... This is a base under Elder Altar... 100% safe from mobs.

PS I dont use iron armor... I use upgraded troll clear up to the point of silver stage and sometimes even use it until i make padded armor, so Iron is always used for utility and tools / weapons, not armor.

For me this is mostly because there isn't a ton of recipes that use black metal. It feels like iron is used in everything. As soon as I got black metal chests I replaced all my reinforced chests with those instead which recouped some iron.

It's pretty weird that half the stuff in the black metal tier uses iron to make, not black metal.

Like, why would the armor take a metal two tiers back? Why does the best weapon at the tier use an old metal while all the mediocre ones don't? It's strange.

reinforced chests are great... however, they are hard to "move" (too many slots to grab all items stored there) and you cant build one on top of another. At my home base, i only use reinforced chests.

For black metal rare usage... i guess it's because you cant MINE black metal. For example, you need 80 black metal pieces to forge black metal sword. It means you need to kill 80 goblins! Its like 5-6 camps ONLY to get one weapon. Now, compare it with iron usage... how about 500 goblins, eh? One iron or silver node (crypt, vein) gives 50-80 ore or so. So mining is MUCH faster way to get ore you need than killing goblins in the Plains. That's why we have a limited black metal usage here. IMO.

Well, I got a reinforced chest full of black metal ingots and I'm not even picking it up any longer. When you go out to explore the world you will kill more than enough little green men. If you really need it go for 2* Berserkers... they drop 16 at once. ;)

I wouldnt really argue which way is faster but it surely comes in handy when the ressources come to you instead of finding crypts for iron and shipping it to the base of your choice.

Ehm you can build other in top another , use a 1x1 wooden floor above low chest and build the new chest on that little floor
