Too much food?
Am I carrying too much food? I find I usually carry 4-6 different foods and only 3 to 5 of each if them. Usually 2-3 of them are for keeping my belly full for around the house or exploring lowish level areas and then 2-3 foods are better tier foods for just in case I get caught unawares or decide go through a dicey higher tier biome. I like to be somewhat spontaneous with my decisions and this gives me that flexibility to go where I want with enough stats to keep me alive.

What you eat is subjective to your play style and progression, lower progression would mean you prob only have the option to take 3 foods. How much food do you keep on you? Just the bare minimum? Do you take even more food, full stacks multiple sets of 3 different foods?

Really, although I carry 5 foods, it is more due to me being lazy and not wanting to micro manage my inventory.

Early game where you are more likely to need a lot of slots and often run out of slots before you hit weight cap. You just don't have that many foods to carry anyway.

Later game I tend to hit the weight cap long before I hit the slot cap.

So I don't even think there is a need to micro manage to that extent.

Even hauling ore... you can drop all your gear and all your food and still only pick up a couple more. I would rather have my gear and make an extra trip.

I only carry the dead easy stuff. Honey, couldberries and wolf jerky.

With honey and couldberries, these are always eaten as soon as one starts flashing - cos they are totally unlimited and dead easy to farm.

This allows me to stockpile good food - pies, bread, etc. I use those for exploring or bosses.

I carry 4. The first two have basically even stats, the third and fourth will boost whichever stat I need at the time.

Well typical food build : 2 hp 1 stamina , and another 1 stamina in the inventory
2 hp 1 stamina best food for everything in last biome we are , and if one want to go full archer/fast weapon kittin ( knives and spears ) 2 stamina 1 hp
If one gets full inventory , most use a pocket portal because get full pretty fast
And for building/farming/working/ exploring in lesser biomes : 3 stamina foods ( can be entire meals or ingredients like onion soup+soup+cloudberries , or onions soup turnip soup and carrot soup if one have big farms )

I use 3 slots for food - 2 HP and 1 Stamina - and at most carry 3 of each when I'm exploring. The exact food depends on what level of tech I'm at and my current stockpiles.

Sometimes I'll swap in a stamina food if I know I'm having to run a lot. If I'm in easier biomes I'll eat lesser foods sometimes just berries or mushrooms depending on what I'm doing.

You almost never want all 3 of the same type. All HP and you can barely fight due to stamina. All stamina and you can't take any hits, but you can fish/run/chop/mine etc.
typically, then, you want 2 hp and 1 stam, or 2 stam and 1 hp. That is a total of 4 stacks, 2 hp foods, and 2 stamina foods. Only for extreme fishing or chopping etc would you slide in a third stamina, and for those instances, just take 1 or 2 of the item with you when you go on that task, eat and its gone and out of your way.
In a meadows home, boar jerky and honey are good 'fall off the roof or kill that stray monster' foods. But at home, you can eat out of a chest and not haul it around.

This is the same issue as wood arrows and other excess stacks. Inventory is too small for all that junk.

I know most players are literal pack-rats when it comes to holding things, but you really only should have under 50 pounds of weight's worth of equipment, potions, arrows, and food on you at all times. Why? So when you get the belt, you can pick up 3-4 stacks of wood/stone/coal/anything else around the same weight.

Makes life a LOT easier, and having a clean inventory lowers your blood pressure. You will never need more than 50 pounds of stuff on you to get things done (unless you are building lel), the rest is just backpack space.

I go with all stamina, all the time. I only ever have HP when I fight a boss.

Personally I keep only 3 different types of food on me at any given time. One an even bonus of stam and health. One with more health than stam and the third with more stam then health. I keep it pretty balanced and that does pretty well. I always make sure I have a good amount of each food. I'll usually take full stacks when ever I go anywhere. If I take the longboat out for a voyage then I might take some extra food if it only stacks to 10. Keeping it balanced I have found to be the best way to use food. Having too little health and an overt amount of stam can mean death if you mess up parries or take on too many enemies at once. To much health and not enough stam can mean death when you don't have the stam necessary to block or parry strong and/or constant attacks. This is my personal opinion and my play experience after over 300 hours. Take it or leave it, you do you boo boo.

For typical day to day, I have bread, love meat pies, and sausages (or wolf skewers)

When I'm going at a boss, I'll go meat pie, servant stew, and usually still bread xD
