How to pause?

I can't seem to find any way to actually use the single player pause function mentioned in the latest updates.
What am I missing? Which button do I have to push?

What happens in multiplayer if everyone brings up the menu at the same time?

The quick way to test pause is to jump before hitting ESC. If you stay in the air, it's paused.

Another way to prove if pause is working is to...
Watch a flame, they stop flicking.

The Rested debuff counts down in minutes and seconds on the heads-up display. Pressing ESC causes the countdown to stop, indicating the game is paused.

If you don't have the Rested buff, whether or not the game is paused is one of your lesser worries.

pretty sure it stops, you are mildly animated but I don't think time is moving. Flames don't flicker, they are inert. It's more like you are in Mortal Kombat waiting to fight.

Pause only works in singleplayer and on multiplayer servers/dedicated servers when no one else is logged into the server, like already stated.

No, it does not work on my dedicated linux server if i am playing alone! I can see my rested status counting down after pressing ESC. Amongst other "things" still moving like trees and mobs and my food is depleting.

Are there any server-side mods running? Some of them might be using virtual player entities.

Escape key in single player. Also seems to work on a multiplayer server if no one else is online (same as sleep)

Ah, so that IS pause. I wasn't sure, considering the fact that time still passes. Guess I expected a pausier kind of pause.

Sometimes when you press ESC it dont pause, so you have to get out of the menu and press ESC again, and then it will work.

I pressed esc to "pause" the game while I did some stuff around my place. Came back to my game to find my base getting destroyed by swamp enemies. What's worse is I died just before I went to "pause." So when I noticed it I couldn't even kill them. This was in Single player btw.

I dunno what's going on but I've been pausing the game with Esc for a long time. I'm so cheap that when I am 1 hit from death, I pause the game and leave the world, join another and heal up, then come back and resume. I've left the game paused and been gone for 45mins to over an hour and come back with my food buffs still going.
Are you playing actual single player or are you playing alone on a server set-up?
