Why Sharp stakes are so useless ?
I repeat, why we should build it:
1 it does very little dmge ( something like 5 point of dmg.)
2 it doesn't give you any material when destroyed....
3 IT loose durability when deal damage, with 12 hits IS DESTROYED

does have anything good ?

You should search for those videos on Youtube where a player killed trolls or even hordes of fulings with just...

...stakes.

And sometimes a trap. With lotsa stakes. :D

Speaking out of experiment, but isn't damage distributed among overlapped stakes, just as it is among piled-up stacks of stone and wood? That could leave you time enough to repair them between too attacks.

They are designed for Grey Dwarevs, which is the point at which you get them.

Real question is why there isn't more advanced ones later.

I find them useful ;)
When you're in the Meadows, it may damage and kill passing fauna (free meat) as well as Greydwarves.
As you will know if you have not gone to bed, you will also get Greydwarf patrols coming out of the Black Forest. The stakes may not stop a Brute or a Shaman, but it will pre-occupy them rather than focusing on your other structures.
So, in the Meadows, Black Forest and even the Plains - 5 points of damage may be useless against Fulings, or Lox but will kill a deathsquito ;)
I haven't found them as much use in Swamp or Mountains though.

Did you know you can kill bonemass semi passively with stakes in one method to take him down?

Don't underestimate the power of stakes.

did they change that? Last time I used them, long ago, you got the mats back to rebuild it after it was smashed.
There really should be some iron and black iron defenses. If home raids are supposed to be a major part of the game, which they seem to be with the frequency, then defenses need to grow with tech level and work well enough that a terrain edited defense isn't the go-to.

Stakes are FAR from useless. I personally LOVE seeing stone-throwing scum-of-the-earth greydwarves trying to get in throwing distance only to end up running into my stakes. LOVE IT!!!

Trolls getting inconvenienced having to move around them while taking damage.
rexpiscator Mar 28, 2022 @ 4:24pm
...line my trenches with them, the opening ends...lol. Love when the GD's hit the spikes and get the blowback from them...and 2nd and 3rd hit finishes them. Easy repairs, swamp and plains critters chew right thru them, so ya, would be nice for a late game defense structure. iron spike maybe, ya think, eh?

Were using them as dragon-teeth against Trolls, seem to work pretty well if you position them appropriately.

Unless you're just sitting back and watching enemies walk into them until they eventually break, you could just repair it with your hammer. Like every time you walk past it, just fill it's durability right back up.

One row is meh, three overlapping rows set up on inclines are fun to watch, they slide into them.
hallaloth Mar 28, 2022 @ 9:52pm
Have they addressed the fact that destroying them as the player doesn't give back matts? It makes it a pain when you're either moving a whole bunch or mislaid them.

I imagine the reason for that is because it deals damage and would allow to the player to build a few, pick them back up and place them throughout a fight.

those sharp stakes kept my home save - had lots of aggressive creatures get killed by them.
just repair them and let them kill another one
i love them

ok,not getting materials back when one missplaces them is not as good

works very well:
