Sad to Say I have come to feel Valhelm is Flawed and Unfiar
I have enjoyed and played over 300 days in my install of Valhelm solo and with friends, managed to build a major base castle with large shops, and 13 othrer bases, and finsihed the first two bosses. I have enjoyed a lot of it, and the building and exploring is a lot of fun and very creative. But.

and there is a very big But. The Trolls. And i fear later on other major foes. The random nature of their actions and the fact that they are massively over powered for all of the other ways of fighting them other than deep moats makes the game a nightmare. The Player do dedicates themselves to really mastering and building a lot is always at risk of losing it all in meaningless attacks from gigantic unstoppable brutes with no meaning at all.

If there was a progressive story of some sort, some way to win over time and gain a skill or weapon that will take them down , then I would have hope. But for now, I feel that it is just beyond reason and good game design. I know many may enjoy the risk and danger, and the lack of security and say well this IS a Survival game. But I choose to do more than survive in life and in games. I feel the developers are trolling us. And are totally indifferent to the lack of balance this creates.

So i think i will sadly be hanging up my Valhelm helmet and gear and wishing you all well. I will also warn any to ask to not try to play the game for in the end, there is no ope of dong more than suffer from unbeatable foes that can randomly destroy any effort you may make

It is not fun. Too bad for there is a lot to enjoy but I dont see the developers having any interest in changing their format or listening to those who like me sadly walk away.

Good luck

well, there is! Full set of padded armor, black metal shield and Porcupine leaves no chances for trolls. Remember, trolls are vulnerable to pierce damage

um, you can block 100% of their damage and one, maybe two shot kill them with black metal gear.

They also fall to a couple needle arrows if you get one of the hits sneaked out of a maxed out bow.

There isnt any fixing needing to defend your home though. The invasions get worse and worse so you need that moat or a lofted terrain platform or your own island etc to keep it all safe.

Trolls?
Honestly, by the time you've killed all of the bosses and you've kitted yourself out in the best gear, you'll find that Trolls are no danger to you at all. By that point they're just a minor annoyance and as easily dispatched as a Greydwarf.
Calling it quits at Trolls after 2 bosses is a little lame. Still, if that's the way you feel, I wish you better success in your other games ;)

I am sixty years old. I kill trolls with no armor to speak of and a level one crude bow as well as wood arrows.

They're no problem once you know how to deal with them. No moat required.

Oh, and wait till you see abominations... wait... stone golems... wait one more... Lox.

They are much harder than trolls. But equally manageable.

This seems to mostly be about trolls destroying his buildings. As far as I've seen, no mob attacks your structures if they can attack you. You are always the preferred target. So if a troll raid happens, let the trolls see you and they will give chase; lead them away from your buildings. (They do have AoE's; make sure they're far enough that that doesn't hit anything either.) Might want to refrain from killing them until the raid ends, otherwise more just spawn to take their place.

When I first started playing and got some greydwarf raids, I would jump on my roof thinking I could just snipe them from there. The greys promptly switched tactics to smashing my stuff. I lost two rafts that way. I quickly learned not to cheese them to avoid them anymore. :)

^ This is good advice. Always lead trolls away from your mansions. Kite them with bow and arrows until you can go in and block their attacks. You will laugh at trolls once you can beat up abominations or even stone golems.

IMO 2 Star Fulings and 2 Star Berserkers are a terrifying adventure in survival until you get some skills up.

Trolls are sissies...:steamhappy:

OMG, 2 star fuling of any type aside from the shaman are a pain. I agree with you.

Complaints about trolls.....300+ in-game days........huh? I expect new players to complain about trolls, totally understandable, but not from someone with 300 days in-game.

How is this unfair? What is flawed exactly? "Developers trolling us"?

Good riddance. Close this trash topic, mods.

Trolls are Tier 2 enemies, meaning that you're supposed to handle them after defeating the first boss. Equipment and weapons provided by that are more than enough to defeat Trolls.

If you have defeated two bosses and somehow still have issues with Trolls, then its about your player skill and not about them being OP in any possible way.

If your that onset of just actually building more in the game, I have a simple solution to your problem with random attacks no matter the creatures.

Simply grab as much wood as you like to put down building crafting tables in a circle around your base. Once you have them in the same zone, as in building zone, go back and put more in between the ones you put out but a little further out.

Now Random attacks still happen, but they never make it to your base. It like creatures wont come inside the zones.

Most important, put the tables off the ground if possible, like on rocks, hooked to trees with flooring attached to tree with table setting on it. Give it a try.

Moats are not hard to dig. Leading a troll back to one also isn't hard, just make a bit of noise by hitting things as you lead it along.

Even without the moat, lead it around and through a bunch of trees. That will slow it down. If it knocks one over, even better. You can jump over logs, but trolls have to go the long way around.

I never got the hang of parrying, and didn't really want to practice on something as big as a troll, but I get along fine with my bow anyway.

Not sure why people are recommending high tier armor and weapons. By the time you have those you don't need troll skins anymore.

Ive had to rebuild my bases to many time to count from the Troll raids. Yes it sucks but it is what it is. Lead em away and kill em. Build the defences or improve them. Its not that hard, sorry bud
Marksman Max Mar 26, 2022 @ 4:07pm
Early game, armor helps against trolls, but not by that much. The only feasible method of killing them is with a Bow or Thrown Spear, unless you get good at dodging their attacks via rolling. It's not particularly hard to get good at rolling, and combining rolls with a Level 3 Flint Spear will likely machinegun a Troll down in no time at all.

I've played like 10 hours and killed 3 trolls. I have no defenses around my hovel. Stone in the forest told me to stay away from the black forest so I didn't build my house in the black forest, I built it in a nice meadow next to the water and a big tree. I've had like 1 or 2 nights where Eikthyr sent some grey dwarves at me in the night while I was cooking but the literally calmed down while I was in my hut and went away. I'll probably kill Eikthyr after I get my bow to level 2. My question is, will I still be fighting trolls at 300+ hours?
