This game does not ask for your phone number, ever.
Valheim isn’t asking for your phone number. It’s a security setting that requires your discord account to be linked to a phone number, that number is not relayed to the server owners and they have no way of accessing it. It’s completely safe as the data is encrypted and nobody can access it except for discord themselves, and if you don’t trust discord with your phone number just realize by connecting to their service you’ve given them your ip and all the information in your user settings
Indeed but it is one I have never used, not giving out my phone number to anyone be it valhiem discord etc etc.
That's basic internet security 101.
No discord worth being in ask for this.
Basic internet security 101 is not clicking links in chain emails, and not using obvious passwords for your social media and online banking. Using your phone number for sites like Discord, Royal Bank of Canada, and NDAX Cryptocurrency - basically legitimate sites is 'common sense'. I have my phone number in at least 30 different websites. Never had a problem since I've been using the internet since 1995. In fact, Steam uses my phone number too for its Steam codes. Do you have issues with that too? ^_^
Of course, if you're super paranoid, then perhaps stop using the internet all together and go back to using Bulletin Board Systems instead? ;) Oh, but BBS's use dial-up... Hmm, a conundrum. ^_^
Most large community discords go down the route of requiring verified phone numbers (aka real numbers that are tied to a phone) to prevent bot spam and it’s the best way to do so. You’ve already given discord enough information just by signing up and using their service that I’m positive your phone number won’t be the most sensitive information you’d be giving the site. All the information is stored pretty safely, and is most definitely inaccessible to everyone at the company except for automated bots that actually do what they need the info for.
Lmao putting discord up there with banking sure...you keep the faith in discord till ♥♥♥♥ happens! lol
I been around the block a few times and trusting discord is.... not very smart. You have no idea wtf they do with your info or how safe it is.
I am all for 2 factor authentication and extra safety measures as long as they are reasonable and don't require me giving out more sensitive info...like a private phone number.
If the only option is via phone I take a hard pass.
That said I only use discord for gaming and such.
Been using Discord for a few years now. Had my phone number verified at various channels. Never had an issue. Furthermore, Discord is run by Discord Inc. which made $150 million USD two years ago. Discord is a platform used by many organizations such as Youtube, Epic Games, and Newegg. Discord isn't some mom-and-pop shop out to steal your phone number for nefarious purposes.
So yeah, you keep 'loling' then, while the rest of us use some basic common sense to do what is required to do basic internet stuffs.
Grats to you mate as for discord being basic internet stuff. lol
I have not had any problems either, not had one account hacked or stolen ever!
Ok. Thanks for that. Not really sure your personal discord preferences merit a forum post but whatever 🤷♂️
Me neither, I've been using the net since dial up. And I do use my number for various security things. I don't use discord, but if I did I would.
Yeah they might let details out via hack, but banks have been hacked, and especially cryptocurrencies. Discord might not have the protection financial companies do, but it's not as big a target.
You're FAR more likely to have your account details leaked from buying sites.
Your choice and all, but don't make us out to be fools when we are using common sense.
Sorry dude but no one is making anyone else to be a fool for using their phone number, its your prerogative, perhaps don't make people out as fools for being unwilling to hand our "private" phone numbers they don't want to share for some BS gaming purposes?
You feel it safe enough that is fine lots of us do not feel it is fine, safe or something we want to do so an alternative like verifying via email should be allowed.
Oh to whoever mentioned phone books, back in the day when phone books were common private numbers were not listed in them. ;)
I bet some of you here have cells that get inundated with BS spam calls and spam texts too.
