Valheim

Does this game really have a PvE and PvP setting?
If you look at the setting that most people call the PvP setting, what it actually does is enable friendly fire.

Technically speaking, the short definition of PvP is: PVP is an abbreviation used in online gaming with the meaning "Player Versus Player". But in most games, PvP also includes Player vs Base.

PvE is Player vs Environment, but in most games means you can't destroy another player's base.

What this game has is a mix:
1) You can always destroy a base, or parts of it, even if a Ward is activated. You can dig under it, eventually destroying it, or other ways to grief them.
2) You can enable friendly fire, essentially giving you straight up PvP.
3) You can disable friendly fire, but you don't end up with straight PvE as you'd hope (there is that destruction of the base thing).
4) You can enable a Ward, even with friendly fire enabled (only gives you partial protection).

Game seems to be designed for PvE, but has more in common with PvP, but very little protections against cheating, so most would not join a PvP server with an existing character.

I hope the next update addresses some of these shortcomings, and maybe I'll start playing on dedicated servers again.

Until then, expect griefing, people destroying your stuff, and stealing your stuff until then, no matter the setting of the friendly fire.

Oh yes there is absolutely forms of PvP in the game without even enabling player damage. There have been posts of people warning about open servers where you join a server and find yourself in a big pit full of trolls for example, and you can absolutely raid or destroy somebody's base. I consider those as forms of pvp, because you are actively harming other players or their progress.

Which is why the people who actually want to talk about legit consensual pvp are typically met with extreme hostility... The majority of the players (me included) want nothing to do with it. But I WOULD like to see more options for it to not only let PvPers play together, but also protect those who want none of it from griefers.

Til then, 99% of the servers are going to be password protected.

The devs have pretty much started that the game is PvE and that is what they are focusing on. They did leave the door open though if there was some big demand for it. My guess is if they ever do more to support it, this will be much later down the road.

Best advice is to play with friends or people you know/trust.

Yes, I agree. I left that last part out, as my post was getting a little bit long at that point.

We have a fun game right now, as long as you are playing single player or with friends.

Let's not call it a PvE game though. That would imply that you can play it with strangers and you would not have your base destroyed or your stuff stolen.

I'd like to see the ward work like a land claim block in Seven Days to Die

The game is PvE. If you are playing with people who will wreck your stuff, that's on you for inviting randos/untrustworthy people into your game. Time and resources don't need to be put towards an issue that doesn't exist unless your carelessness allows it.

Point is, there are plenty of people running dedicated servers as if the game is PvE. People like you keep saying it is PvE, so they try to make it work. It is very frustrating to join one of these servers and then have your stuff destroyed, some of it stolen, and worse. A true PvE game can be played with randos, worst that usually happens is they build on top of rare resources, block off areas, pillar large parts of the map. You then boot them and remove their stuff. Way worse than that can happen in this game if you keep thinking it is PvE. The game is essentially a poorly designed PvP game masquerading as a PvE game. Or a single player game with coop shoe horned in.

I'd like to be able to play with other people than a few trustworthy friends, but won't be doing that anytime soon until they fix the game to be truly PvE.

Game is pve. There is very few games where people on your side cannot grief if they really want to.

From friendly fire to blocking doorways, if someone is truly a troll they can ruin the game. Same as valheim.

We could argue for a lifetime about the "definition of PvE" but in the end this game has 2 modes, one where you can kill other players and one where you can't, and in the latter case there are some loopholes that allow griefing... just like any PvE game.

PvE = Player vs Environment. It is PvE wether you like it or not tbh.

PvP and PvE is someone's attitude. A game can give some mesures to protect someone against griefers. Still PvP and PvE is someone's attitude.

If efficient measures to protect against griefers are missing, servers will stay password protected so these people play only with friends/trusted people.

PvP people can do their own public PvP servers, guess they are already doing. If they password protect their servers too, they may just protect their servers against sociopaths themselves.

If advertised PvE servers are used to grief other PvE players, that's also no PvP. Just sociopathic.
