Since I got home, I rechecked the admin page. Everything from Netgear's instructions looks correct on what I did, yet that site you gave me still says that the ports are closed.
About your server setup, are you hosting the server on your PC or a seperate machine? Are you using the Steam dedicated server app?
I'd like to add, if you have set your profile to private it wont work as well. You have to set it to public for it to show up for your friends. At least if you directly host the game on your PC.
I am also assuming you are NOT launching the game via Valheim in steam. You MUST launch it via the server app every time you play otherwise the dedicated server does not boot up.
REMEMBER: You MUST run the dedicated Valheim server app. Otherwise you are not hosting a server, but running the game normally and are subject to the normal co-op gameplay options.
Assuming you are doing everything 100% correct with the dedicated server setup and launch:
Failed to connect errors are due to timing out usually. Means one of you (you or your friend) has a slower internet connection so it's struggling to connect.
For a temporary solution, maybe forgo trying to set up a dedicated server. Start a game normally and make the world then just invite your friends to hop in as you would without a server.
Once you get the server working, you can transplant that world seed into it along with all the progress you and others have made without issue.
LAN IP usually starts with 10.*.*.* or 192.168.*.* (* = anything can be in there)
as 1 person mentioned... opening ports is 1 thing
but you also need to port forward them to your computer, so router knows which computer is the server
I've done all of this and my wife who bought the game only sees the server the first time i create it. After i logout and log back in, she is never able to see it again on her friend server list.
I thought that the port forward entity is what did the opening. Port forwarding is what i used. Im about to give up... we live together and when we play borderlands 3, we're able to play together. I assumed that valheim worked under these same pretenses.
then you need to contact them and ask if they can open the port
(that's one of the possible problems if you are sure that firewall, antivirus and port forwarding are set properly)
you might also be in the same case as me, where internet provider doesn't block ports... but simply blocks portforwarding
all the portforwarding is done on internet provider's side and any port forwarding I do on my side is just waste of time~~
because of that I can't host public servers
only steam-hosted servers are a thing for me ;d (gladly game supports it)
if you live together then why bother port forwarding?
computers in the same network can join using LAN and ignore all the public connections
also, can you try if borderlands still works?
if yes, then you could try the page to see if borderlands ports say opened
By steam hosted do you mean the regular multiplayer server, that you host on your computer shes a friend logs and can play with you? Like i mentioned before, my wife who plays in the same room as me can only get in my game the first time i create a world. After that it never shows up on her friend list again. This is mind boggling.
I only did the port forwarding because i ran out of ideas.
Yes, that's what i was talking about... and we're having issues even in that regard as well. I just logged bordelands 3 into both of our computers and it worked fine. She could access my game there, so it's definitely something with valheim over here. We even reversed the roles and created a world on her computer and the same thing happened.
In the friend chat thing on steam, for bordelands 3 it says join game as an option, but it's not the case when we are both playing valheim.
