Also why it's important to have a backup set of armor, weapons, food, & potions.
Other than that, take your time, use a bow & poison restance mead and avoid swimming.
also bring the materials for a float and slowly close in on your corpse location while clearing everything with the bow. prioritize targets on land and place a workbench there in order to be able to constantly repair your float and carve
Worry about your corpse later and finish getting your bronze gear up and make better food.
Pull drauger from a distance to farm up some of their entrails for making sausages, one of the better early foods. Properly fooded up with decent bronze armor and you shouldn't have too much difficulty dealing with swamp mobs.
Think I will have to try Luponix's approach. I wouldn't be having such a problem if this swamp wasn't so far of a swim/boat from the shores of the nearby biome.. This is very challenging.
I do keep my stam as high as I can, get near my corpse and then check the area, and if it aint camped I run and grab else I wait a bit lure the enemy away from the grave and then circle back and grab.
Touch wood its worked for me so far, I try not get stuff in my inventory as it will slow the grab.
Grab and make space, then take food, then equip armour... occasionally I need to fight so I go very careful, parry and kill.
I have done this in swamps, even in a crypt.
Dont forget you get a corpse run buff, so you are a little tougher than you think.
I had a similar problem early on and abandoned my grave, made new armour, better armour and learnt a lesson. Then i went back a bit later with much better gear and food to seek my revenge :)
Yeah it was an interesting challenge... But I got frustrated and used god mode... Now I'm embarrassed because I got complemented on determination while I was off enabling cheat mode =-P
Oh well, god mode off, and I won't be visiting any swamps unless they're close enough to land that I can walk in and out. Also with god-mode on I was able to find the hidden sniper.. He was under the water.
Troll armor and bronze mace are fine for swamp. What I would suggest (without knowing your map setup) would be to make your portal in meadows/forest next to the swamp, hopefully not far from where you died. Throw down a raft if needed and paddle along the coast til you find a good spot.
Then, enter the swamp during the DAY (Don't attempt this at night, sleep in a bed if needed) and sneak. Stay on land as much as possible, make a hoe to raise it as you go, avoid all enemies til you're close to your original corpse marker. If the area is clear, grab your stuff and get out. If it's NOT clear, try to stay hidden while you get close enough to reach it.
If the enemy spots you, run for your corpse marker. If your inventory isn't empty you might not get everything, just do a quick "take all" and get out of there with as much as you can. That gives you the corpse run buff which offers massive resistances so you can get away, and then plan on the best way to get the rest of your stuff.
(If all else fails, you can always cheat with devcommands. But there's always a way.)
Also when sailing towards the shore don't worry about your boat, ram it into the shoreline.
The boats are quite sturdy. If there are enemies ahead, just set full sail and leave the rudder, that way you can dodge and block incoming projectiles.
i always carry around with me a portal that has no tag as emergency portal. it is easiest to place and does not require to give it any name to turn it on. It is connected to my main base.
The biggest problem is my corpse has the swamp key I got from beating a boss. No clue if that's a unique item, but I was assuming I'd need it.
