Blast Furnace vs Smelter

I feel as if the Blast Furnace should be able to smelt ANY metal, having it work for just 1 is getting on my nerves, especially when I am mass smelting ores.

Craft 2 or 3 of each its faster then :)

I grab the cart and fill it place it next to each furnace or smelter. Great place to store stuff as well.

that doesn't address the fact that the Blast Furnace has only one use atm, i'd like to see it be able to smelt any ore also seeing as how its an upgrade from the regular furnace.

If I had to guess, which is all this response is, I would bet that future content will include more metals that the blast furnace will smelt.

Technically it can smelt two kinds of ore. :P Flametal just doesn't have a use atm.

Actually it makes sense that you wouldn't be able to do all metal in the same furnace. Considering that different metals have dramatically different melting points, if you were to try to melt a low temperature metal in a high heat furnace, you would create a situation where the metal would be overheated, which can create other problems when it comes to pouring metal into molds and things like that. For example, you can pour copper, tin, bronze, and many alloys into a cast iron form as the cast iron has a much higher melt temperature, but if you were to superheat that copper into excess, you could then damage or even melt your mold. I don't know the vaporizing point of copper, but I'm pretty sure even at molten steel temperature copper would still be a liquid, just a crazy volatile one. So I mean yes you CAN use a higher heat furnace, but it from a functional standpoint it would be dangerous/impractical.

I just made a couple of these because I figured it was an upgrade....what kind of dumb science is at play here? A blast furnace that doesn't have the ability to turn off the bellows? That is the only real difference between them that I can see. And it doesn't have room for more metal either, or more coal. What a chore babysitting these things. All that trouble to go out gathering metal and the stupid furnaces have a low amount they can hold, making metal gathering a bigger chore than it needs to be. Could you at least raise the amount? Even double would be better than what it currently is at. I really can't see the necessity of these added time sinks or forced day care.

Please remember that the game is still on early access, they'll probably tweak this thing up in the future. They provided a roadmap for 2021, give a try again in a few months, it will have more stuff to do I hope.

Ya when I got a blast Furnace I to was meh about how I had to have both

currently blast furnace smelts only black metal and flametal (so 2 ores)
but, yeah... it should asmelt the previous ones...

or at least be faster or whatever ;d
currently blast furnace is just downgrade of smelter

because realism is a point of focus for IronGate right? leave the IRL arguments out of this please.

this is a progression issue, the Blast Furnace being that its a mid game upgrade for the Smelter should at least smelt lower tiered ores in some capacity. currently its actually slower at smelting BM than the smelter is for any previous ores, its a step down not up.

And, you don't need much of the metal it can smelt, so you soon have 3000 ore from all the giggling hobbits that keep bothering you and nothing to make with it.

I work with furnaces irl, including a hand fed coal one at home, and a "blast" should work for everything. The furnaces at work can do steel, copper, etc all based on the settings. My coal one can reach temps between BBQ and 1400 degrees depending on how I set up the coal/air tunnels/extra gas/etc.

Lets put aside IRL though

As a progression item in a game, it still doesnt make sense. How is it a step up if it only does two things, one of which is basically useless? It should be able to do everything, otherwise you have old gen and new gen side by side and its both ugly and inconvenient.
