Keeping Deathsquitos away from my base?
This is my first playthrough. After doing very well in the meadows and dark forest, I went looking for the swamps, setup a base on a different continent on what looked to be the meadows but with a great view of both the swamps and a herd of huge buffaloes and their little goblin minders in the plains.

I didn't realise those goblins were actually very strong and would constantly swim across the water, wreck my base, my portal and kill me. After breezing through the previous two biomes, the game's difficulty level went WAY up... Long story short, after dying a LOT and almost giving up, my base is now a absolute fortress, and whenever I get a "ground is shaking" or "swamp is smelling" event, I'm safe but have a great view of those goblins and buffloes absolutely destroying masses of invading Cyclops, Draugr, Skeletons, dwarves and so on. I'm keeping this base.

The problem is those Deathsquito's. They fly, don't care about my defenses and have surprised and killed me several times. Any way to keep them away from my base or at least get a window or view that keeps them out while still having a good view?

High defensive walls could help.

Iron gear will help. SIlver is better. Once you have silver you will only be afraid of 2 star Furlings... and berserkers...

My advice is accept current defeat move someplace else come back later when you are better geared. The world is a big place.

Build a specific type of wall and they cant fly over it. Dunno if it helps if they're already right above you but these walls will help.

they attack in a straight line and have no health to speak of. you can shoot them by the score if you put up spike walls in a circle around you and a roof over you, they can then only fly into the wall and die or buzz around and get shot and die or bash at your roof (shoot them if they do that).

or get behind any sort of cover with a roof and shoot them generally. the spikes just make it that much easier.

Just a thought, but did you skip the mountains biome?

Windmills and bonfires kill them too

Make sure anti-spawn items are near your perimeter wall. That way the no spawn zone gives you a 20m buffer past your walls making them less likely to swawn close enough to wander in. Just make sure they aren't visible from the outside as that can attract attention.
(these are buildables that aren't just structure or decoration but have a purpose and can be interacted with. So standing torches, kilns, fermenter, work benches, and so forth.)
Aside from that always be well fed and have a shield. They are blockable starting with iron banded I believe, and have very few hit points. Block, swat. Very survivalable with troll armor and a shield and swamp level foods.

Thanks guys, will upgrade my base. Could also be that I'm a bit underpowered for this plains/swamp/meadow hybrid biome because I spent all my time and resources building ships to travel between continents and reinforce my new base (and dying quite a few times). In addition to smashing several of my teleport portals, those goblins (furlings?) destroyed at least 5 of my Karves before I got the whole thing defendable... But I finally beat those furlings, they can't touch my upgraded base. Now to deal with those Deathsquito's and get better armor and weapons.

i build bases in the plains because i find them much easier to construct since there is practically no deforestation compared to other biomes. i dig trenches around my bases about 2 blocks worth so trolls nor lox can attack my stone walls from the opposite side. fulings fall into my trench and cant get out. for the deathsquitos, i build windows with iron gates in them so i can see out, but they cant fly in or break it down in one hit. i also build multiple levels to my bases and when i am in my attic, i can hear buzzing which tells me a deathsquito is near. however, once you get into the iron, silver, or blackmetal age with your gear, a single deathsquito attacking you by surprise is like a tickle. upgrade your armor, make a shield, and upgrade your foods to get more health and stamina and never worry about deathsquitos again. to kill them, just block their attack and immediately hit them with a melee weapon for a 1 hit kill. they are scary when you first venture into the plains, but after you get better gear and foods, theyre nothing.

To be fair, when you're new, the order of the biomes isn't exactly immediately clear. I had thought in the beginning that plains would be the next biome, because they were very close to me and I had gotten frost damage on the mountains.

Well plains is the final biome right now so there's that. Also there's a few things to know about deathsquitos that are helpful to remember. For one, they do not attack structures. Secondly, they only come after you if you are detected, so maybe just forget the windows, because it's only for the views right?

I also think workbenches prevent them spawning so there's that too. Lastly, when you get your armor to a point, they just be come a nuisance.

I've had a theory that I've never gotten around to testing, based on that anti-deathsquito wall video.

Using the stabby stake wall around the upper part of a wall, like crude wooden barbed wire.

Based on the movement pattern of deathsquitos going over walls, it seems like they'd hit the spikes, and since they have so little HP, they may not make it over, right?

Put up a roof. If they can't see, then you have no problem. My base wall had those area wardens up and those were getting sniped by skeleton archers, I relocated them to the base of the wall on the inside and now nothing much happens at all. I also have wolves slowly breeding and taking over the area around the base, so not much happens beyond me going out to collect the fallen tribute...

My best advice is to move away from the plains biome. It is actually two levels ahead of you, as you need to conquer the swamps then the mountains before you begin working on the plains. So the game is def over powered in that aspect.

If you insist on living there however, break their line of sight and turn up mod noises (I think thats a thing) cause then you can hear them better. However, I recommend trying to farm the. They are super cheap for some really really good arrows. Just 4 needles and some feathers for 20 of the best current arrows.
