Dagger, is it any good?
The dagger is doing x10 and not x3 while sneaking, but on the other hand the base damage is something like 5x less than other one hand weapon. Simple maths would thus indicate it has no use.

I will gladly learn from someone my maths are wrong or there is something I did not factor. I need to do a massive opening sneak damage on several buffed trolls, given I had the folly of playing with triple health monsters (from CLLC mod!).

Also, they retaliate with +50% damages and one shot me if not careful, but that's another story.
Also they are usually 3+ stars :)
And with fire imbue or extra power.

Ahem. I might be out of my league in my current game.

Good for sneak attacks and running after Deer when you are out of arrows.

It's a quick. Meaning a quick single attack and a quick 1-2-3 (normal attacks that is).
No movement penalty at all, so handy to have in hand while running.
With some skill in it, it one shots most of the lesser mob types (also handy for 'squitos).
Looks cool (especially the Abyssmal) and sheathes on my hip. :)

It may not be as effective for modded games but I like it a lot for vanilla.

Do you mean I can manage to place 2 or 3 stealth attacks with it? Because the damages will not be higher than a stealth attack with a sword e.g.
Megahurts May 3, 2021 @ 6:56am
You'll only get one stealth attack in as the enemy will be alerted after the first (unless you 'lose' him and return).

I've never run (or looked up) the numbers. The alternate attack does more damage even when not a sneak but can't tell you how much. I actually don't use the alternate much (stamina cost...and I keep missing lol), but I know higher tier daggers can hit from sneak for well over a thousand HP with that 10x...and possibly more.

Other weapon do more damage but sometimes the dagger is enough.

In the end, it comes down to preference and playstyle I guess...the dagger has it's uses IMO. It's always in my '1' slot.

The dagger gets much better when you get higher into the game. When your weapon skills are higher and you can fight tougher enemies it makes sense to maybe have one.

My favorite use is for the big buffalo guys in the plains biome.

op is right, daggers are as of right now a waste of ressources

I think Abyssal dagger is decent earlier on.

You need to consider the daggers secondary attack, the jumping lunge attack, not it's primary attack.
For example the Blackmetal Daggers normal attack is only does 36, while its secondary does 108. Now with the backstab bonus of x10 that's 1080 damage!
The black metal sword for comparison is 285 with its secondary, Backstab of only x3 means only 855!
The dagger also allows you to close a significant gap with the secondary attack while other melee weapons do not.

Dagger has the highest backstab-damage of all weapons, but that's about it.
I still like it, but Trolls, Eikthyr and Lox are the only enemies were you can really effectively use it imo - deathsquitos you usually need to parry with a shield, so a sword does the job.

In the swamp and later you are unlikely to get a backstab. And furlings mostly come in groups, so you want an AoE weapon there.

I'm going to refer back to what Weaver said - you have to consider the secondary attack for daggers. Not only does it do significantly more damage when attacking, it can also close the distance. That's very useful when making a sneak attack on anything, as the closer you get and the more cover you thus 'lose', the more likely it is that the target will detect you. It might not seem like much but that 2-3 meters of jumping-stab makes a big difference. Which also makes the dagger a great early game choice for killing deer, boar, and necks.

'Late' game - Early Access, of course - it is still a useful carry. Why waste your sword durability on killing that annoying Greyling who is trying their very best to punch your house down when a quick stab from a Black Metal Dagger will do the job? And when you're out exploring on foot? Or maybe you want to dispatch that annoying Deathsquito from the deck of your longboat? Daggers don't have much if any 'cleave' - so you're not going to sink your own boat or at least have to put in for repairs, unlike if you go swinging an axe or sword around.

The best backstabbing weapons in the game are bows.

If you want the rogue RP factor of sneaking up on something and stabbing it, go for it. Otherwise daggers are meme weapons. Any of the situations where daggers are "good", other weapons are nearly as good or far better.

epic weapon for greydwarfs and it can kill a troll in one blow
once an enemy staggers the dagger hits em critical
also great for taking out deers without alarming the other deers in range
and i use this little buddy for clearing bushes and small beeches
great tool imho

Had a troll invasion on my most recent game. Killed six of them. Would have been more but that's all i could find from my defense tower. Fine Bow.
PorkSocks May 3, 2021 @ 2:40pm
As an aside, Trolls are one of the easiest things to kill in the game due to their size and weakness to piercing. A bow two shots them at high skill with good gear from "surprise" (any distance where they don't start aggressive, and they are easy to see/hear). I'd rather face 10 trolls than five draugr.

I'm pretty sure stealth M3 attack will be incomparably stronger then what you would produce with other weapons.

But outside of that, weapon doesn't offer much to me.
