Earth walls + Moat + Workbenches to prevent spawns within the walls is as safe as you can get anywhere. Preferably away from deathsquito spawn points. Build your main workbench and portal under a rock for security.
If you don't want to do earth walls because they are now far more expensive to build, you're probably just looking at making a wide moat. This can be pretty safe anywhere too. I a building tip I haven't yet tried but I think will work is to leave chunks of earth wall standing in the moat to hide workstations behind them which are there to prevent spawns. Without some sort of cover, I'm guessing spear wielding Fulings will destroy them. Deathsquitos might anyway.
None of these suggestions are "pretty", but they are very effective/functional. If you want a pretty design, you're on your own.
I've not gotten deathsquitoes at the top, have at the shooting platform.
I've considered building right next to Meadows, but I wanted to build on the stone pillar too badly.
