Experience with GPortal?
My wife and I play Valheim over our LAN, just the two of us. Right now, I start a game, I choose Start Server, then hit Start and we both play. As I understand it, this means that my PC is both hosting the game server and playing my client. I'm experiencing an annoying amount of lagging and stuttering and wondering if this is the reason.

I've been considering GPortal, which hosts Valheim servers, but I have several questions:

Can I take my saved game and move it to the GPortal server, how does that work exactly? I don't want to consider restarting a new world unless absolutely necessary. How do the logistics work of running a GPortal game, how do I connect?

Am I correct in believing this may improve performance? Particularly, since I take it this means instead of playing over our LAN, we will both now have to connect to a remote server.

Any other insights or suggestions on using GPortal?

I've had decent experience renting G-Portal servers. I'm currently operating a small 10-slot Valheim server for family and a couple of close friends and it's been well worth it- great ping, seldom any server lag, and none of us have great gaming systems. They have a small wiki that might answer your questions, here https://www.g-portal.com/wiki/en/vallheim-settings-and-server/

I've used G-Portal for Conan Exiles and Farm Simulator 2019 in the recent past and have had good service. But like anything in gaming, YMMV.

@Leaf: many thanks for your prompt response and review. I'm going to give them a try.

I'm using G-portal as well and have to say i'm very satisfied with how it all works out.

You can also upload your own World to your Gportal server.
When renting a Server, you will be provided with FTP access details.
With that you can access the file structure of your server and simply copy your Worldsave over to the dedicated server.

In terms of performance, i don't know your machine's specs, but it should naturally improve over all.

Cheers

I’m just going into my second month with a GPortal Valheim server. It’s lightly used by three people. No problems so far.

Thanks for the replies, guys. One question, now. When my wife and I join the game, we have to manually type in the IP:port and then password. We never had to do this playing on our LAN. Is there a way to automate this process, or at least change the IP to a regular world name?

You can set the server as a favourite in steam from View -> Servers. That way you don't have to input the IP everytime and just connecting will start your game.

You will have to input yoyr PW though on both connecting from the favourites list and once the game has loaded. I at least haven't found any way for saving the PW, but got used to doing it since it doesn't take more than couple of seconds.

Thanks! I got that working and, yes, it's a pain in the ass to have to input the PW twice, but it beats the hell out of having to input the IP!

The steam favorites doesn't validate the password or send it to Valheim, so the first prompt you can just type a letter.
