Valheim

Is there a way to get multiplayer to work offline?
My family of four was playing together on my LAN when the internet provider went down. Our game was instantly disconnected - which doesn't make any sense since we're using a dedicated server on a fifth computer in the same room. I tried everything I could think of to get our session back up but I had no luck. After an hour of changing settings and standing on my head we all tried playing solo in our own worlds, but quit 30 minutes in because it just wasn't as much fun.

Frustration aside, is there any way to play Valheim in multiplayer when we can't connect to the internet? The server kept giving me the error message "game server connected failed". I tried several variations of running my local world so my family members could join but we couldn't figure out how to connect. I got on my phone (which still had internet) and downloaded the goldberg steam emulator but I must not have done it right, because even though the "connected failed" error went away, no one could join the server.

Is there a way to do this or should we plan on playing minecraft whenever the internet goes down?

ive had spectrum for very long time, never any trouble, uncapped data, fast, cheap, basically best internet around
Glad to hear it. My internet was out last night from 11:30pm until around 1am.

It is indeed hard to use public ip which does not exist at all, unless you are connected to the internet... 🤷‍♂️
I'm guessing it was a mistake or something.. definetely not something that can be fixed without using black magic 😅

I suppose I wasn't as eloquent as needed. We usually have an internet connection. We just seem to lose it for a few hours every time a storm blows through. When we have a working internet connection we can't connect to my server using the external IP address (The WAN IP). This might be because I have something configured incorrectly in my firewall or that my router is reporting the wrong external IP address or because Steam needs me to wear a foil hat before aligning my dilithium crystals. So even when we have a working internet connection we use the internal IP (LAN IP). I wasn't tryng to get this particular issue resolved, I was only mentioning it to aid in the diagnostic process as someone asked a related question. Using the internal LAN IP works just fine, as long as the dedicated Valheim server was started while there was an active internet connection.

Sounds weird. Can you host via steam and have people connecting to it?
Can try Whatismyip to verify your external ip.

I'd assume connecting to steam on startup is some anty piracy policy. If it is, they are unlikely to do anything about it.

It might just be the default setup and not an examined decision. I doubt people pirating the stand alone server is a serious concern.

I agree. You don't pay for the standalone server, and you don't register it. You only get to use it if you have paid for the game, and you can start the game without being connected to the internet so it wouldn't make sense to build an anti-piracy call into the server that you can already start as an anonymous user. I think it's just an unexpected bug.

I'm getting a different IP from whatismyip than I get from my router, but neither one works. I can host via steam but it only works when I put my internal IP address and we add it to our steam client manually. I haven't put a lot of energy into diagnosing it.

Silly question , did you do these things?

1:Login to your router.
2:Locate your routers port forwarding section.
3:Put the IP address of the spare computer/host in the appropriate box.
4:Put the TCP and UDP ports for your game in the matching boxes in your router.
*you may have to reboot your router for the changes to take effect.

Ports To Forward for Valheim

TCP: 2456-2458
UDP: 2456-2458
eh why not May 26, 2021 @ 8:33pm
It appears there is a way to do so but it requires some steps that involve emulation. There is a reddit post about it.

I don't think you need to resort to that. I just think you have to have it configured correctly.

whatsmyip gives your public IP
router gives router IP

router IP doesn't matter, you don't use it

public IP requires: internet connection, portforwarding, ISP's allowance to host servers, make sure that firewall/antivirus/other stuff doesn't block the connection, once you have those 4 you can join using public IP

But if you were trying to connect to a local host server over a LAN, using wifi you would ... what?

you would use server's LAN ip -> the router will handle it anyway
and as the guy said LAN works already

You can also use the server's local network name now, on Windows at least. They patched that in a while back.

He specifically said LAN does not work when his internet is down. LAN valheim without internet connection is a thing.

My router tells me the IP assigned to me by my ISP, which is generally your public IP. When I was on Comcast it would be the same as whatsmyip. With Spectrum I'm not sure what it's reporting. There might be a NAT on the local loop somewhere that's fowling things up. As I mentioned, neither address is working externally. It's possible that Spectrum is blocking the server. At some point I will put some energy into it as I have another service that I need to access from outside my network that I used frequently before I moved to this area.

Correct. That's what we've been doing for the last two weeks. Easier than typing in the LAN IP.
