Workbench/ Forge upgrades space planning
Anyone else struggling with how much space thesw upgrades take? I'm only on bench 4 and forge 3 and ugh. I've started digging basements and hiding the auxillary pieces 9ut of sight but the distance to table ratio is limiting.

I like crafting inside my base because I like admiring my handiwork. If I move crafting outside the only reason to run into the main house is cooking and sleeping (maybe that's good enough). And yes I could make the base larger but my current place is pretty huge, by my standards, and having 2/3rd of the interior devoted to crafting feels meh.

I dunno, dumb complaint maybe, but how are other people handling this? Dedicated crafting buildings? 2nd floors? Something else I haven't thought of?

I've put 1x1 floor-tile shelves up and stacked some items off the ground. Seems to work fine. Specifically the Bronze "Anvils" and the Iron "Anvil" will place on a shelf directly above another workbench upgrade.
eh why not Apr 23, 2021 @ 10:04am
No space issues, have pletny of room for everything.

I agree. I feel like it would look better, if you could place the upgrades closer together. I guess if you´re looking at it from a functionalistic point of view you can hide them away underground or place small floor tiles on the wall to stack them there but it´s not the nicest aesthetic . In my opinion the game mechanics also shouldn´t incentivice you to do so. But maybe I´m missing something that justifies these limitations.
Anyways, you can find creative ways to work around that issue. My solution at least for the first couple workbench upgrades is placing the workbench close to the outer wall. The upgrates related to woodchopping go on the other side under a little roof next to a woodpile so it looks like a wood processing area. Planting a tree next to it gives it a nice touch, too.

First I place the workbench/forge next to a wall with some free space on both sides. The wall needs to be 2 "units of wall" in height. Then I place shelves on both sides of the of the workbench/forge. Some upgrades will fit on top of the shelves while others are placed under them. The "tool racks" fit on the wall above the wb/forge between the two shelves to either side.

Ooh that's a good suggestion! I do like the look of the equipment and 100% appreciate it from a, um, realism pov lol, so hiding them beneath the floor felt cheezy.

Like the suggestion about putting some of the wood expansions next to a wood pile!

i put the forge and workbench inside, any clutter goes outside on the opposite side of the wall, pretty clean

I just use false floors and shelves for most of my upgrades, I just have the tool-racks showing as I like the aesthetic.

I have all my upgrades outside along the wall within range of each station. I did have to build a little nook for the bellows though. I didn't want to move any chests and I couldn't seem to get it close enough to the forge and get the wall back in place correctly.

I didn't really plan ahead and sort of painted myself in to a corner on the layout.... but, live and learn.
The workbench is level four and the forge is level five.

Later on in the game you're going to need at least a 4x3 area for the forge and a 4x3 area for the workbench.

That shelf thing is a good tip.

One nice thing about the building in this game is that the snapping is very forgiving. I like to place things just outside whenever possible in a position that still allows me indoor access. In this base I have the bellows, kiln, and fermenter all located outdoors with full indoor functionality.

i dont know if you know this, or have access to it yet, but once you unlock stone floors, you can build things that normally require being built on earth anywhere. fireplaces, hearths, kilns, smelters, etc can all be built on stone flooring. one base i made i put my smelters and kilns on my roof using a stone flooring and staircase to access. allow you to build fireplaces on whatever level you want as well.
