In the end, every weapon is going to be good enough in any situation with enough player skill. And there is (usually) enough iron in the swamps (your mileage may vary) to make more weapons if you're unhappy with your first choice.
(Sledge basically sets off a big aoe, good for groups, and thing alike leeches, but it's slow, and you can't use a shield, so it's better suited for multiplayer, but I still use it near the endgame for fulings villages ;D)
Iron Mace is a must. It was the first item I crafted upon getting enough Iron, and I have no regrets whatsoever. When fully upgraded, it can one-shot 2-star skeleton (or very, very close to it), Blobs are one-shotted, Oozers can take just a couple hits, and a staggered Draugr, even 2-star, only a couple hits.
I also suggest either the Iron Buckler (2.5x Parry bonus) or the Banded Shield (1.5x Parry bonus, but more block armor). Learning to Parry is an absolute must if you intend to survive combat with starred Draugr.. especially Elites.
Outside of that, I also crafted the Iron Sledge after farming an Elite Draugr trophy. I don't typically use it in combat (for now), but it's absolutely amazing for clearing out sapling trees for excessive amounts of Wood and Resin when you need them.
The Huntsman Bow is good to have, but if you have a fully-upgraded Finewood Bow, save Huntsman for later on. I also suggest keeping your Iron Armor set stored in a chest for later; you can get by perfectly fine in the Swamps with a Troll set, and it saves you some carry limit also. (Iron Chest or Legs == same weight as an entire Troll set)
I don't particularly like Spears or Atgeirs, so I haven't crafted one of those. However, if you're trying to play it safe inside of Crypts and peek around the semi-mined sides of Scrap Piles to pick off the Draugr that may be in there, an Atgeir would be pretty useful.
You may need to also loot the other ingredients before the recipes unlock. For Swamp-tier stuff, you'll want to make sure you loot:
* Bloodbag (from Leeches)
* Entrails (from Draugr)
* Ooze (from Blobs)
Those are the Swamp-tier ingredients for Black Soup (I think is its name), Sausages, and Muck Shakes respectively. Turnip Stew should unlock as soon as you loot an actual Turnip, which the recipe calls for (3x Turnip, 1x Raw Boar Meat).
Why are you not making nice comfy beds and pretty sconces?
I just cant think of anything else....
