Is building on shore of ocean a good idea?
As long as I don't alter the shoreline I mean. Wanting too know if I build on shore, do them serpent things bother my base?

Serpents only exist in the Ocean biome, so if you managed to make a base ON the Ocean biome and sit in there, Serpent's might spawn. Otherwise they will never spawn and bother your base.

I build my permanent bases on the shore and build a dock. I also put a trench/moat around it. On the inside I put up stake wall or stone wall. The only difficulty/annoyance is keeping mobs on a raid from going around the wall through the sea. I try to build up the land into a cliff they can't climb or bounce over (darn blobs!).

The locale that looks easiest to set up a base is right where a river joins a sea. Not sure if its an outlet or inlet as no current that I can tell. Logs in the river float in place. I notice trolls can cross this river. So might have side towards sea wrecked. Could go further down where its ocean only. I suspect trolls can wade around any obstacle I place. May go inland a bit for my main base. Enough so moat is between base and ocean. Then I maybe only lose the dock portion, or can kill them while they attack that.

Serpents do not voluntarily leave water. If a viking drags one ashore, the serpent will move back to the water by the most direct route as quickly as it can.

Dry land structures not within horizontal melee range of water are safe from serpent attacks.
Boats and docks are another matter. In my experience, the most usual reason a serpent would show up at a base on the shore is because a viking lead the serpent there.

Wouldn't worry about a serpent.

Not a big fan of shore bases though. I used them a lot when I started to play but found it more difficult to put out good defenses as enemies just will swim around stuff.

Close to shore yeah, but right on the shore I avoid unless the topography is favorable like a sharp drop off or something.

Nearly all of my bases and/or small outposts are along a shoreline.

Makes base defense much easier. Not to mention access for a ship.

Same here. Dig the shoreline to make a steep dropoff and even swimming bad guys cannot climb it. On my docs I place stairs down to the water with a door at the water line. If skellies climb the stairs they are stuck there while I kite them.

Serpent no, but as someone said, creatures do swim right out to sea just to get around the walls. Very annoying.

not directly on shore, but a 20-30 meters inland is safe from the waves
and a trench to the water depth to deter mobs from attacking

Thats why i dont build shoreline towns/bases anymore.
They(mods) just swims around, its better to build a bit away from the shore, and make a road to the docks.

Are there any rivers in the world that flow from the see/ocean up to the mountains?

Think about what you are asking.

Yeah...think about it, pal ;) You are the one not being sure if location when river joins ocean is inlet or outlet...

I suppose it could be confusing since an "inlet" is often meant as a river outlet into a sea/ocean or just larger river.

But the person who mentioned it stated water flow direction... I suppose the correct way would be to say "the "river inlet" is where the river's outlet is" <or even a passage between islands>. Either way calling it a river inlet would have been correct in the first place.
