Can't repair my boat

I pulled up on the shore to repair my boat while exploring my new world. I build a crafting bench, park the boat on the beach right next to it. I can see the health of my boat is about 50%. I have some timber in my inventory. However, when I mouse over the boat with the hammer, it turns blue to suggest it's highlight, but nothing happens when I click to try and repair it. What am I doing wrong?

Don't need material to do a repair, they are free. Mods? Dedicated server? Single player?

Restart the game?

1-Hit the boat till its destroyed
2- take the materials
3- rebuild the boat
will mostly fix the problem
