Is it possible to build a usable bed that isn't on the ground?
Since campfires are currently the only sources of "fire" and they can only be placed on the ground as far as I know

Campfire can be placed on stone blocks. Granted you need to unlock that but it does mean you can eventually bypass this limiation.

Also the hearth can go anywhere but it's a bit too large .

I have a bed and a fire on a second floor. I built up the land outside the house to place fire on it for second floor than I put my bed up there. One fire downstairs for cooking, one fire upstairs for warmth.

Neah, you build bases, fires and smelters in trees. You can build beds in towers or other structures too

I tend to build campfire outside of house and that works for beds

The logs made from core wood count as stone tier building piece.
Meaning ; you can place campfires on them like a stone slab.
You can make campfires in a tree house with them.

You can also have a bed on second floor near the campfire placed on first floor... Be careful of smog though.

If you tea-bag on a fireplace you can give yourself a hot coals enema and will be toasty and warm.

Build a house. Remove one floor panel. Place campfire. Put your bed nearby. Solved.

Yes, you only need one floor space to be missing for open ground, and you can place the campfire there. Its not a problem if you build on a flat terrain without elevating the foundation and it is not a problem if you can use a Hoe to raise terrain on the spot.

The point of this limitation is simply to prevent building fireplaces on wood parts, including on second floors, which doesn't make any technical sense.

you can place a wood 2x2 floor below a fire after it's placed, also as I said above, the core wood logs count too , so you can build a campfire on your 2nd floor just fine.

I tried that but failed. Is there a small detail I'm missing?

Campfires can't be placed on wood. therefore i use to build a chimney inside

level the ground, place the campfire, then once the campfire is placed, place the floor over it, it will thus be above the tile, while also having a floor... it works nicely. so long as you have the flooring level with the ground.

No, you are not missing anything :( I did this in my first world, seems they patched that function of the core logs.
This is no longer possible.
