Why is planting stuff so damn hard to do?
It not like using the Cultivator is a pain, it just isnt a well thought out process, does this really have to be that complicated? Let seeds snap to a grid or put a damn circle around it, like a workbench ring, to show the range of enough room. Its a pretty flaky process as it is now.

How much room does a beech seed need to grow? Been attempting to plan out a grid to build around the seeded area...

Carrots too, why the hell doesnt planting anything snap to a grid to make it easier, but having 1 seed in a 2x2 area is not enough room ? wth?

Gardening definitely needs better attention. We should be able to put a half fence down and grow things inside the raised cultivated square. Like a real garden. :7days:

I wouldn't want them to be snapped. I like to randomize my forest replanting.
Oh, I wouldn't ask for auto-snapping.

What SHOULD work is that you hold down the button and it keeps planting IF it is outside the range of existing plants/obstacles.

So you can control the shape/placement of your field... but those who can't be arsed simply hold the button and move down the line.

The current system is more the lack of a design.

I imagine it will have a few QoL things in the future.
Personally I would like there to be something like the cart that would auto plant (with the proper spacing) things from its inventory (Top Left to Bottom Right).
It would add some progression to farming.

Also, a farming skill to decrease stamina usage when planting, I really don't like eating food just to have the stamina to plant without having to stop every 30 seconds.

As a person with around 600 crops planted fairly consistently, thats my input.

What I have found that works for me:

Build a wall or palisade at the end of your planting area. Stand back and plant your carrot or carrot seed (have not found other seeds yet).

For left to right distance, plant one at each edge of the palisade and one in the center (palisade gave me better line up points than the wall).

For up/down distance, the top of the graphic of the item you are planting sways left/right (hard to see with carrot seeds at first). That top part of the plant should just miss where the ground touches the palisade. As you move away from the palisade, the top of the item you are planting should just muss the bottom of the previous plant.

I can do a field of about 180-200 carrots plus a field of carrot seeds to replant in about 4-5 minutes of real time.

Keep e button pressed as you walk through your garden and pick up veggies quickly, its already there to use. Figuring out how close you can plant stuff is trial and error, but it only took a few lost carrots to learn how much space they need.
I'd rather see more content atm than a "fix" for gardening that really isn't needed.

Almost forgot, I did have one spot carrots were dying in and it turned out there was a big mostly buried rock in my garden i had to remove and re cultivate. Hope it helps.

I dont get why i have to plant seeds and fruit seperatly. Its not intuitive. Why not let it drop 1-2 seeds by normal harvest.

I did a checkerboard of floor tiles and plant in the middle of each one. Should not have to do that, but I lost too many guessing.

to the above: IRL to get seeds you let the plant mature longer; for example a cucumber would grow to about the size of a shoe and turns yellow, then the seeds are mature and the thing is only edible if you are starving to death. Most? Half? of the things we eat are immature seed-wise (fruit tree produce being an exception).

atm the gardening system seems a bit tedious. It for sure can take its time. I think they will improve upon this in time tho. Having to not mind if the seeds are too close to anything would be a good start. adding options to harvest more at a time would be great tho.
Not too bad as it is, just a bit tedious atm.

This being so early in early access its expected to lack design in several areas.

I do like the idea of the planting range thing, not like they will actually do it but thats been the best idea/suggestion so far.

Hi, yeah indeed this feature is not well polished yet, but I've found this solution:

I guess nobody here gardens or farms. Compared to real life it's not that much effort to lay out a row of 9 one meter floors, plant 20 seeds on corners, then remove the floors. I lay the rows 1 meter apart. Second section starts 2 meters above.

I have room for 200 plants if I want. Weathering doesn't matter so i leave the floors out. As I harvest and plant I move the floors to the open spot created by harvesting. It seems to take as much time as planting by eye but with fewer errors. After getting the seed stock up I usually plant 60 carrots, get 180 seeds, plant them, Harvest 120 for food, then plant 60 again when needed.

Every game has trade offs. Minecraft , for example, has grids but plants need a water supply.

My basic feeling is why play a survival type game if there's no effort needed to survive. I don't think dumbing down the game is an improvement. My brother and I fly a lot of flight/ combat games and the more realistic the controls are the more you hear complaints.

Short answer : It isn't

Theres a mod to fix this ,called farm grid, works a treat.

My only issue with planting is the dust cloud every time you plant something.

I do occasionally place one or two seeds/seed plants too close to something, but it's not a big deal. Not like gardening IRL has a 100% success rate either.
