I live in Germany, my NA friends talked me into getting the game and playing with them. I can't see their server, and they can't see mine.

just the public list shows closest servers. You always use IP.

um, no? You can't really bypass the intercontinental connection. Light speed is kinda limited Albert said, and the devices in between won't make it faster.

maybe internet provider blocks ports/hosting?

also why look for server?
dedicated servers ask for trouble ;d
people failing port forwarding, internet providers blocking stuff etc
maybe game has some sort of automatic ping filter and server filters out

you can try steam server list
steam -> view (left top corner of steam, over "shop" "library") -> servers -> change filters so the game is valheim (and make sure you have the same ping/pass/etc filters too)
Do you see each other's servers?


but better idea is to:
host in game (start game, select character, tick "server", start world) and invite friend throught steam friends

Because this isnt a High esports game where you should have sub or around 20 ms ?
they are probably also not playing valheim as Paid professionals so yeah.

There is no region lock in what amounts to a peer-to-peer game.

It isn't region locked you're just having troubles joining their server. I had the same last night with joining my mate down the road

You can use a link on your desktop like

(whatever)\steamapps\common\Valheim\valheim.exe +connect 94.196.217.66:2576

Then it launches the game and directly connects to this server.

You can hire a server located a similar distance/quality from all players and split the difference. Light speed doesn't make most of the lag on Earth, that's like 5ms pole to pole.

If you are having issues with finding the server in the "Join Server" list, it's because that feature is not accurate. It appears that when you populate the list of public servers in-game, that you get a roughly 2000-4000 server list of the servers that have the best connections to your system. If your server is configured properly, you can acquire the IP address (if relatively static) and people can join that way, or a friend can join if you are in the server. For the friend-joining, I believe you both have to be online.

Doesn't look like there is region locking though, just bad server list management.

Like I said... I got the IP from my friends and it worked.
