As for using cheats to advance faster...
There's not much in the game past iron gear and if you speed past that with cheats you'll find yourself in my position where I've mined enough ore to upgrade everything to t4 and am just bored building now.
Hell yesterday I joined a friends server on a new character with nothing and killed Eikthyr with a flint knife and wood shield I farmed from scratch and did half his health in one sneak attack because knives are broken af on sneak attacks.
I beat the 3rd boss with T1 iron armor. After I farmed that I went to fight him with a mace and shield and won with poison resist mead. (although he was tough for me).
You really don't need to upgrade everything and I think that's where people are going wrong sometimes with this game thinking everything should be max level but that's not the case.
Then upon getting t1 padded its upgrades were that easily accessible it didnt make sense.
I am in agreement for a re-balance of the armour grind but leaning more toward making it longer or at least making previous tiers more valuable with certain set bonuses.
Yeah this come from the verticly linear progression, each tier make the previous one useless and so the biome that goes with it become pointless to explore too.
So use a mod then, if it's a gamebreaker for you, which it seems to be for a lot of others. It alters the true/false toggle in the game for the Portal resctiction. I must admit I don't see the need for the restriction either. People are OK with sailing around, as I am, because exploring is part of the game to find new biomes and get more resources, but not allowing metal through is just tedious.
Have you ever played a 'survival' game? They are, by design, a time sync. Its like buying a horse, then griping it doesnt go 100 mph. If you bought this because 'VIKINGS', well...there is your issue.
Now for a single player we did haul a lot of iron out of those two crypts... but not enough for 5 - 6 people!
