It was visible but too deep to get from the surface.
Since then I have read of these tips:
1) get directly above the item on the ocean floor and look down vertically. Should be able to grab them.
2)Jump off your boat and during the plunge try to grab them
3)Abyssal harpoon.
I have never tested any of these. Never been actively looking for serpents so I have had few opportunities to try.
I have killed them close to my boat and gotten a scale a couple times before but after finding out the scales sink from another discussion we did some testing and you can infact harpoon the buggers (using multiple people taking turns) and then force them into the shallows, it takes alot of time and effort tho, Although i will admit its kinda worth it for a cheap shield that has the same block stats as the current highest tier shield.
Diving in full metal armour sounds like a bad idea.
