I've played my fair share of Conan Exiles and yes, it's definitely the best Sandbox Survival game out right now. I wouldn't go as far as to say that it's PvP servers are empty. All servers have been busy with the new 2.1 updates. I play on two different official servers, both PvE-C, but one is Exiles map, other is Siptah map. The only reason they made the Siptah map is because the Exile map is capped out. There won't be any more new lands to explore in Exiles because there's no room left to put it.
The Age of Calamity mod as well as a few other mods does offer the game some additional longevity, but even with that and the new 2.1 update, it will only continue to lose people's interest without any new expansions.
As for this game, it's like Minecraft and Skyrim had a baby. Seed generated worlds means an endless supply of new maps to explore and uncover. While the progression may never change, it will probably be possible to add a lot more content. This game has literally surpassed even ARK at it's highest popularity peak. With 3 million copies sold in 17 days and 60k+ reviews averaging 96% positive. I think Conan might have a run for it's money in the Sandbox Survival genre.
It's not as if the extra player numbers means it will be easier to team up in Valheim, since everything is almost 100% locked behind passwords. All I can say is that I got bored with Conan after 51 hours, and in Valheim I have 87 hours and still really keen to play. Make of that what you will, if anything at all.
AH so Conana's world map is fixed and not procedurally generated?
Yeah, that's a dealbreaker for me.
I like to have ENDLESS exploration in my sandbox games - thanks a lot for this post, it was extra helpful :)
Conan's world is always the same, you'll always know where everything is at, but it has thralls and mounts if that's your thing.
I'd recommend The Forest first. It's better than Valheim and cheaper.
However, Valheim reminded me a bit more of games like Breath Of The Wild and even STALKER, meaning exploration is fun and satisfying, and the game can be decently challenging as well.
It's one of those "one more game / task...!" -types of experiences.
Not only that, conan has damn human npc's that you can both fight and recruit. It is finished in terms of content and also has an offline mode as of the newest update. For some it may not matter but in Conan you can climb any soft of vertical wall or object which is an amazing feature in my eyes.
Now valheim has procedurally generated world which rarely is a thing in those types of games. It's definitely an interesting feature but the problem is that there just isn't enough variety. Most often you just have to traverse dense forests and meadows with nothing in between whereas in Conan you will be stumbling upon unique points of interest and there is a lot of them. In Valheim you can also shape landscape to a limited extent which is an amazing feature when it comes to building. However, this means the game will never support PVP properly as it's designed around cooperation rather than rivalry. Despite no landscape shaping, conan is absolute king when it comes to building with the insane variety of set pieces and decorations. You can literally place plates on tables and decorate them with individual pieces of food.
Despite conan being an overall better and more complete game, valheim still has it's medieval european theme and fable-ish atmosphere that is very appealing. It also has sailing and sea monsters which aren't available in conan. Both games are good, conan is better but if you re looking for viking theme nothing can replace valheim.
