Taming boars takes WAY too long
I've had one in a pen with mushrooms to eat for probably a week in game time and it's only 20%.... What's the deal with this?

You cant leave the boar alone. you have to be near by it the whole duration of the tame about 10-20 mins total. Same as when you have 2 boars you have to be near them both in order for them to breed.

Wait till you start taming wolves... the Boar are easy, just drop 10 or so Mushrooms or other fruits/crops and they will domesticate quite fast... Wolves take 6+ meat and nearly a week, you have to make sure they are not Startled or hunting you in order to build Heart/Taming.

Same applies for any animal that is able to be domesticated.

if startled they basically start back to square one.

That seems to be the issue, they are perpetually startled. Seems like a broken mechanic

What's in your area where you are taming them? they can be startled by enemies nearby or by other animals (if you have wolves in pens close by).

The 20% you got was probly from every time you checked on them or passed by them it would start the tame. then stop when you left the area of them.

I have 21 boars. I started with 2. the boars were not taming at all on there own. but when i hung around them i started noticing the hearts appearing and changing color. after about 10-20 mins i got the message th boars are tamed. then a few minutes later i saw a bunch of pink hearts and a few minutes later after that i had a baby piggy.

Just caught some boars while collecting wood. Took maybe 10 min or so to reach tamed. You will notice little green hearts whenever their meter goes up, but you need to be around their general vicinity and you have to have food in the pen. Also, it doesn't appear as though deer startle them however they startle deer. Any other spawn will spook them.

When they breed, you'll hear a squeal and see hearts, if you go and check shortly after you'll either lay witness to a boar giving birth or find a bunch of piggies running around.

The boar is perpetually spooked if I'm anywhere near.

Mine breed, while I'm a continent away.

Boars are afraid of fire in the vicinity. Make sure that you don't have any standing torches, sconces, firepits nearby, and that you're not carrying a torch around them.
That may solve your perpetual scared boars problem.
